The most heavily consumed item at a PCB rework station is the soldering tip: the 900M-T series (Hakko 936/937, general hand soldering) in B (conical), I (fine), K (knife), 2C/3C (bevel) and 2.4D (chisel) shapes; the T12 series (FX-951, FM-2028, fast heat-up) and the T18 series (FX-888D). We also supply soldering stations FX-888D and FX-951 (FM-2028 iron), solder paste Sn63/Pb37 and SAC305 (lead-free), rosin-core solder wire 0.6/0.8/1.0 mm, soldering paste flux, Goot desoldering wick 2–3 mm, tip-cleaning sponges/brass wool, iron holders, flux pens and handheld desoldering pumps.

FAQ
– Tip has turned black and will not wet? — Oxidation; clean it with brass wool and tin it before switching off; replace it when pitted.
– Leaded or lead-free? — Depends on product requirements (RoHS → SAC305, 350–370 °C).
– Original Hakko or counterfeit? — Buy through an authorised distributor and ask for import documents; PRIMEAG imports through official channels.

How a soldering tip is built and why tips “die”

According to Hakko, their soldering tips consist of three layers:

  • Copper core: conducts heat from the heater to the tip end.
  • Iron plating: protects the copper core from being eroded by solder and flux, and provides the surface that the solder wets. The working end is pre-tinned.
  • Chrome plating on the rear part of the shank: solder does not adhere, limiting the soldering area.

Tips fail because of: oxidation (which accelerates with temperature), solder eroding the iron plating, highly active flux wearing the plating, burnt flux residue blackening the tip, mechanical impact, and heating–cooling cycles when soldering large copper areas. Signs of end of life: the tip changes shape, becomes dented, shrinks or has holes. Once the iron plating is breached, the copper core erodes very quickly — the tip must be replaced and cannot be restored. A tip that is only blackened by oxidation can be cleaned and re-tinned.

Extending tip life

  1. Use the lowest temperature that gets the job done. Do not raise the temperature to “compensate” when switching to lead-free solder — high temperature only wears the tip faster.
  2. Choose the largest tip that fits the joint (K knife, C bevel, D chisel): a tip with high heat capacity transfers heat well at a lower set temperature.
  3. Clean with brass wool (Hakko 599B) instead of a wet sponge: water thermally shocks the tip and speeds up oxidation, especially with lead-free solder. If you use a sponge, use distilled/deionised water.
  4. Tin the tip after every use and before switching off — Hakko calls this the most important maintenance step.
  5. Do not dip the tip directly into flux; apply flux to the joint. Use a mildly active flux, in just the amount needed.
  6. Lower the temperature or use sleep mode during short breaks; switch the station off when not in use for a long time.

Solder alloys and flux

Alloy Composition Melting temperature Notes
Sn63Pb37 63 % tin, 37 % lead 183 °C (eutectic point, melts at a single temperature) Easy to solder; use only when the product has no RoHS requirement
SAC305 96.5 % Sn, 3.0 % Ag, 0.5 % Cu 217 °C (solidus) – 220 °C (liquidus) Lead-free, the common standard for RoHS products

RoHS restricts lead in electrical and electronic equipment; a lead content above 0.1 % can make a product non-compliant. Do not share soldering tips between leaded and lead-free solder on a RoHS line.

Flux is classified under IPC J-STD-004 with a 4-character code: base (RO rosin, RE synthetic resin, OR organic, IN inorganic) + activity (L low, M medium, H high) + halide (0 = below 0.05 %). For example, ROL0 is a rosin flux with low activity and no halide. The older designation RMA (rosin mildly activated) corresponds to mildly activated rosin fluxes, usually halide-free. Low-solids flux is called “no-clean” — cleaning after soldering is not mandatory.

Solder paste: powder size and storage

  • Solder powder particle size (defined in J-STD-006): Type 3: 25–45 µm; Type 4: 20–38 µm; Types 5 and 6 are finer. Fine-pitch components and small stencil apertures need finer powder (T4).
  • Example from Indium (SAC305 solder paste, 5.8LS series): store unopened jars below 10 °C, shelf life 6 months; take the jar out of the refrigerator at least 2 hours before opening so the paste reaches room temperature — if opened while still cold, moisture condenses into the paste and causes solder balling and spattering. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the label.
  • Do not return used paste from the stencil to a fresh jar.

Checking soldering stations in an ESD area

The soldering tip touches component leads directly, so it must be grounded and free of leakage. Published specifications of the Hakko FX-888D (70 W, 50–480 °C, stability ±1 °C at idle temperature): tip-to-ground resistance < 2 Ω, tip-to-ground potential < 2 mV, ceramic heater. Hakko recommends periodic checks (daily or weekly) of leakage voltage, tip-to-ground resistance and tip temperature using a dedicated tip thermometer, then entering the offset into the station.

Tip – iron compatibility

  • 900M-T: irons of Hakko 936/937 stations and compatible models.
  • T18: FX-888D.
  • T12: FM-2028 iron on the FX-951 station (according to Hakko UK’s compatibility chart). T12 tips have an integrated heater, so they heat up quickly and recover temperature well.

Common mistakes

  • Setting 400–450 °C for every joint, and leaving the station on all day without soldering.
  • Scraping the tip with sandpaper or a file — this destroys the iron plating.
  • Pressing the tip hard onto the joint instead of choosing a larger tip.
  • Switching off with the tip dry and untinned.
