Which soldering tips fit a Hakko FX-888D or FX-951 in Vietnam? The FX-888D takes T18 series tips; the FX-951 with the FM-2028 iron takes the T12 series; older 936/937 stations take 900M-T. Choose the tip shape by the joint, clean with brass wool and tin the tip before switching off. PRIMEAG supplies Hakko tips by part number, order items 3–5 days, quotation within 30 minutes.
Buyers usually remember only the station name, not the tip part number, while Hakko tip series are not interchangeable. This article starts from the machine name.
- Look up by station: FX-888D → T18; FX-951 (FM-2028 iron) → T12; 936/937 → 900M-T. See soldering tips, irons and solder.
- Shape: the largest tip that fits the joint, with a lower temperature setting.
- Tip care: brass wool, tin before switching off, no scraping.
- ESD area: tip-to-ground below 2 Ω, below 2 mV (FX-888D), checked periodically.

1. Look up the tip series by the station you use
A tip part number consists of the series name and a shape code, e.g. T18-D24 is a chisel tip in the T18 series.
| Station in use | Tip series | Common shapes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hakko 936, 937 and compatible generic stations | 900M-T | B, I, K, 2C, 3C, 2.4D, 1.6D | Separate tip, heater located in the iron |
| Hakko FX-888D (70 W) | T18 | B, D24, C2, K | Ceramic heater; temperature range 50–480 °C |
| Hakko FX-951 with FM-2028 iron | T12 | B, BC2, D24, K, ILS | Tip with integrated heater, fast heat-up, good thermal recovery |
Codes: B conical, I fine, K knife, C bevel, D chisel.
2. Choose the tip shape by the joint
Hakko recommends using the largest tip that fits the joint: knife K and chisel D tips store more heat, so they can be set to a lower temperature and wear more slowly; conical tips are only for fine-pitch leads. With SAC305 (217–220 °C), do not raise the temperature to “compensate” compared with Sn63Pb37 (183 °C). On RoHS lines, do not share tips between leaded and lead-free solder.
3. Keeping tips durable per Hakko guidance
A tip “dies” when the iron plating is breached and the copper core is eroded by solder; it cannot be restored. Four things make tips last:
- Clean with brass wool (Hakko 599B) instead of a wet sponge; water thermally shocks the tip and speeds up oxidation.
- Tin the tip after each use and before switching off — Hakko treats this as the most important step.
- Do not scrape the tip with sandpaper or files; apply flux to the joint, not to the tip.
- Lower the temperature or use sleep mode during short breaks; switch the station off for long breaks.
Replace the tip when its end changes shape, becomes pitted, shrinks or has a hole. Temperature and solder details are in the article on soldering defects on electronics lines.
4. Soldering stations in an ESD area
The tip touches component leads directly, so the station must be grounded with no leakage. Hakko specifies for the FX-888D: tip-to-ground resistance below 2 Ω, tip-to-ground potential below 2 mV; the manufacturer recommends periodic checks of leakage voltage, tip-to-ground resistance and tip temperature. Bench, bench mat and floor mat go to the same ground point as the station; bench top to ground below 1×10⁹ Ω; anodised aluminium frames are insulating, so the bench top needs its own ground cord. See the article on setting up an EPA for an SMT line.
Self-check before ordering tips
- Read the station and iron names on the machine label; for the FX-951, also check that the iron is the FM-2028.
- Read the code engraved on the old tip’s shank; the start of the code shows the series (900M-T, T18, T12).
- Photograph your most common joint and the old tip to choose the shape.
Factories in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai (Mon–Sat) can ask PRIMEAG to come and measure free of charge the resistance of soldering bench tops, mats and ESD supplies in use with a TR1800 and 5 lb electrode, including items not bought from PRIMEAG, with no limit on measurement points and no obligation to buy; the schedule is confirmed the same day, measurement within 3–5 working days, a PDF report with photos after 3–5 days, for reference only, not a substitute for audit documents.
Soldering tips by part number are order items, 3–5 days; website prices exclude 8% VAT.
Frequently asked questions
- Will a Hakko T12 tip fit the FX-888D? — No. The T12 has an integrated heater and is used only with the FM-2028 iron on the FX-951; the FX-888D uses the T18 series.
- A new soldering tip is already black and will not take solder. What should I do? — A black tip is oxidised: clean it with brass wool and re-tin it. If the tip end is pitted, cratered or has a hole, the iron plating is breached and it must be replaced.
- How long does it take to get Hakko soldering tips from PRIMEAG in Vietnam? — Tips by part number are order items, delivered in 3–5 days; send the station name or the tip code you use, and PRIMEAG quotes within 30 minutes during working hours Mon–Sat.
