A moisture-proof LED light (also called a waterproof light or vapour-tight batten) consists of a plastic body and a clear plastic diffuser cover with light-spreading ribs, sealed by latching clips along the body. Each set comes with G13 LED tubes: 10 W for the 0.6 m tube and 20 W for the 1.2 m tube. Thanks to the sealed housing, dust, moisture and insects can hardly get in, so the tubes stay clean longer, the light output stays stable and the fitting is easier to clean than an ordinary open batten.

Applications

Factories and warehouses: general lighting for production areas, aisles, warehouse racking and packing areas.
Damp, steamy or dusty areas: wash areas, canteens, toilets, cold rooms, covered outdoor corridors, car parks.
On workbenches: replaces the traditional metal reflector fitting – see details below.

Why use moisture-proof lights on workbenches

Workbenches are usually fitted with sheet-steel reflector lights: the reflector edges and screw tabs are rather sharp and sit at head height for a standing operator, or right above the hands when reaching for parts on the upper shelf. A moisture-proof light has a plastic body with rounded edges, so it offers:

Better workplace safety: no sharp steel edges to scratch hands or bump heads when bending up and down or when assembling and dismantling the bench.
A tidier bench: a slim one-piece body with no wide reflector blocking the upper shelf; cables run neatly inside the fitting.
No dust on the tubes: the sealed cover keeps the tubes clean, so illuminance on the bench top drops less over time; just wipe the cover with a damp cloth.
Soft, even light: the ribbed diffuser reduces glare compared with bare tubes, more comfortable for long shifts in assembly and visual inspection.

Which type to choose?

Workbenches 1.2–1.8 m long: use the 1.2 m set. Choose the twin version for tasks that need more light (soldering, defect inspection, visual inspection); the single version is enough for normal assembly.
Short benches, cabinets, shelves, tight corners: use the 0.6 m set.
Workshop, warehouse and aisle lighting: usually the 1.2 m twin set, suspended or ceiling-mounted.

What does “tri-proof” mean?

In international literature, moisture-proof lights are also called tri-proof or vapour-tight: water-proof, dust-proof and impact-proof. The two ratings to read on the label or datasheet are the IP rating (IEC 60529) and the IK rating (IEC 62262).

Reading IP ratings correctly

Note: the IPx7 immersion rating does not include IPx5/IPx6 water-jet resistance. Wash areas with pressure hosing need lights explicitly rated IPx5 or IPx6, not just IPx7.

On a workbench, the light sits at head height and close to the upper shelf — easily hit by boxes, trays and tool handles. Choose a light with a declared IK rating.

IP rating, IK rating, cover material, luminous flux (lm), colour temperature and Ra index of each model follow the supplier’s datasheet — please request the datasheet when ordering.

Cover material: polycarbonate and how to clean it

Moisture-proof light covers are usually made of polycarbonate (PC) — a clear plastic with excellent impact resistance, usable from about −40 °C. The cover material of each model (PC, PS or PMMA) follows the supplier’s datasheet; PS/PMMA has lower impact resistance than PC. For PC covers, the properties to know are:

Good resistance to alcohol: wipe the cover with a damp cloth or alcohol to remove oil and grease.
Do not use acetone or ammonia (found in some glass cleaners): PC is not compatible with these substances and will cloud and crack.
Strong alkalis and aromatic hydrocarbons also damage PC; avoid concentrated alkaline industrial degreasers.
PC yellows under UV unless it contains UV-stabilising additives. Lights installed outdoors in direct sunlight should have a UV-resistant layer.

How much light does the task need?

The workplace lighting standard EN 12464-1 for the electrical and electronics industry specifies maintained illuminance: rough assembly 300 lux, medium 500 lux, fine 750 lux, precision 1,000 lux; electronics workshops, testing and adjustment 1,500 lux. Lights on the workbench help reach the required illuminance at the bench top without relying on ceiling lights. After installation, measure the illuminance at the bench top with a lux meter to choose correctly between single and twin. The ribbed diffuser reduces glare but also absorbs part of the light; a yellowed cover or one coated with oily dust will noticeably reduce illuminance, so include cover cleaning in the periodic 5S schedule.

Installation and maintenance

Close all latching clips along the body; a single open clip means the fitting is no longer water- and dust-tight.
Check the rubber gasket when replacing tubes: replace it if hardened or torn. Replacement tubes must be G13 LED tubes with the same wiring type as the fitting (direct wiring or via ballast), of the correct length and wattage.
Pass the cable through a correctly sized cable gland and tighten it; route the cable from below or with a drip loop so that water does not run along the cable into the light.
The metal bench frame must be connected to a protective earth conductor in accordance with electrical safety regulations when lights are wired onto the bench.

Notes for ESD areas and common mistakes

The light body and cover are insulating plastic. ANSI/ESD S20.20 only limits insulators within 2.5 cm of the component; a light mounted on the light frame, well away from the bench top, usually has no effect — but do not place unprotected components on the light body or light shelf.
Cleaning the cover with ammonia-based glass cleaner or alcohol mixed with acetone.
Assuming “moisture-proof” means it can be immersed in water — read the IP rating correctly.
Forgetting to close the clips after opening the cover to replace a tube, or a misaligned gasket.
