Why electronics cleanrooms need dedicated gloves

Medical nitrile gloves only control pinholes and powder. Cleanroom gloves must also be washed repeatedly in ultrapure water, packed in a cleanroom, and tested for particles and ions per lot. Particles falling on wafers, lenses and displays become cosmetic defects; residual chloride ions corrode component leads and circuit traces. In SMT, assembly, optics and semiconductor processes, gloves are a cleanroom consumable, not just PPE.

Which processes they are for

ISO 5 (Class 100) – DC: wafer handling, lens assembly, camera modules, display lamination; wherever the CoA must state particles and chloride.
EPAs, SMT assembly, PCB inspection – OC: worn-on-hand ESD data per ANSI/ESD SP15.1 to answer audits; lower price than DC.
Picking small parts, counting, visual inspection: textured 0.08 mm fingertips give better tactile feel than 5.5 mil gloves.
Lines where operators get itchy hands from full-shift wear: switch to Shirudo; let the affected group trial 1 bag before switching the whole factory.
Not the right choice for: handling sharp parts or heavy solvent wiping – thin gloves tear easily; use ASAP 5.5 mil.

Sizing & correct use

Sizes S / M / L; measure hand circumference to choose. The 12-inch glove pulls over the coverall sleeve, so choose a snug size, not a loose one.
Double bag: remove the outer bag in the gowning room and open the inner bag in the clean zone. Do not decant into other bags.
Put gloves on last, after the coverall, hood and face mask. Change them after touching skin, hair or a phone.
EPAs using OC: the wrist strap must still sit against the skin, worn under the glove. During trials, test person–glove–ground resistance with a wrist strap/footwear tester before and after the shift.
Store in unopened cartons with sealed bags, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight; issue first-in first-out according to the expiry date on the label.
