Why electronics cleanrooms need dedicated gloves
Cleanroom gloves differ from medical nitrile or ordinary vinyl gloves in the process after dipping: multiple washes in ultrapure water, control of released particles and ions, and packing inside a cleanroom. The operator’s hand is the contamination source closest to the product; clean gloves keep PCBs, SMT components and optical parts free of particles and ionic corrosion. The long cuff goes over the coverall sleeve, stopping skin flakes and fabric lint from escaping into the clean zone.
Not every process needs ISO 5 gloves. Class 1000 (ISO 6) cleanrooms, packing areas, and food and pharmaceutical plants can use vinyl cleanroom gloves at a lower cost than nitrile, as long as the gloves are still washed and packed to cleanroom standards. Which processes are they for?
- PACER 1000 Vinyl: Class 1000 (ISO 6) cleanrooms and below – packing, visual inspection, material feeding, clean material stores; food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics plants that need low-cost food-contact gloves.
- PACER 1000 Nitrile: electronics assembly, handling of PCBs and components that require a long cuff and ESD protection; processes involving oil or IPA, where vinyl is less durable.
- Do not use vinyl when: the product is sensitive to plasticizer films. Vinyl gloves in general contain a high proportion of plasticizer (a study on PMC measured 30–44% by weight, versus under 0.2% for nitrile); for wafers, optics and displays use nitrile – see Shirudo DC or Nitrilstat LE.
Choosing the size & correct use
- Sizes S/M/L depending on batch; send the size you currently use or your hand circumference and PRIMEAG will supply the right size. For large orders, take a sample bag of each size so operators can try them first.
- Vacuum-sealed vinyl bags: open only inside the clean zone; do not repack into other bags outside the cleanroom.
- Put gloves on last, after the coverall, hood and mask; pull the cuff over the sleeve cuff.
- Change immediately if torn, punctured or contaminated with chemicals, or according to the plant’s change interval; gloves are single-use.
- Gloves do not replace the ESD wrist strap: the strap must still be in contact with the skin, worn under the glove.
- Store in unopened cartons with sealed bags, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat sources; issue on a first-in, first-out basis and check the expiry date on the label.
