Anti-seize is brushed onto bolt threads, nuts and mating surfaces before tightening so the metals do not bond or rust solid and can be disassembled after months of service at high temperature. LB 8008 C5-A copper-based, up to 982 °C; LB 8150 aluminium-based, general purpose, up to 870 °C; LB 8009 metal-free, for stainless steel and aluminium, up to 1,315 °C.
When to use anti-seize? When a threaded joint must be taken apart after long exposure to heat, steam or chemicals: exhaust bolts, furnace flanges, injection moulds, steam valves, turbine assemblies, and stainless threads prone to galling. LB 8008 and LB 8150 are labelled as meeting MIL-PRF-907F (US military specification for high-temperature anti-seize). Henkel, with CO per batch.
Which grade?
- Stainless steel or aluminium threads, or where the customer requires no metals (copper, aluminium) → LB 8009.
- Very high temperatures around exhausts, furnaces and burners on carbon steel → LB 8008 C5-A.
- General workshop maintenance, moderate temperatures, one can for many jobs → LB 8150.
Correct use
- Clean the threads, wiping off old oil and loose rust. Brush a thin layer onto the male thread, covering the thread roots; there is no need to coat the female thread as well.
- Anti-seize does not harden. At high temperature the base oil evaporates and the solids remain, keeping the two metal surfaces from bonding.
- Anti-seize reduces thread friction: at the same torque, bolt clamp load will be higher than when tightened dry. Joints with strict torque requirements must be adjusted per the equipment’s technical instructions.
Common mistakes
- Using anti-seize on threads that must be locked against loosening: the two functions are opposite – threads under vibration need Loctite threadlockers.
- Applying too thick a layer: excess picks up dust and runs onto surrounding parts.
- Using oil-based lubricants on oxygen lines: mineral-oil greases must not be used in oxygen systems.
- Pipe threads that must be gas- or water-tight are a job for thread and flange sealants, not anti-seize.
FAQ
- How does anti-seize differ from ordinary grease? — Grease stops working when hot; anti-seize contains solids (copper, aluminium or graphite) that still keep metals from bonding after the base oil has evaporated.
- Which grade for stainless threads? — LB 8009 is metal-free, and Henkel recommends it for stainless steel, aluminium and soft metals.

The LOCTITE 2025 catalogue confirms that LB 8008 C5-A (copper + graphite, up to 982 °C) and LB 8150 Silver Grade (aluminium + graphite, up to 870 °C) both meet MIL-PRF-907F. According to the Henkel 2008 catalogue, the K factor (steel bolts and nuts) is 0.16 for LB 8008 C5-A, 0.18 for LB 8150 and 0.16 for LB 8009; the operating temperature range starts from −29 °C.
