3M Earplugs

Common models: 1100, 1110.
Delivery: stocked items are delivered in 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); 1270/1290 in 5 days; availability is confirmed with the quotation.

Earplugs are mandatory where noise exceeds 85 dB (presses, air compressors, grinding, cutting). 3M 1100: PU foam, disposable, 37 dB reduction — low cost, box of 200 pairs; 1110: same as 1100 with a neck cord; 1270 / 1290: reusable triple-flange silicone with carrying case, noise reduction as stated on the box label, for workers wearing them full shifts over many days.

Model Type SNR Cord Packaging
3M 1100 Foam, disposable 37 dB No 200 pairs/box
3M 1110 Foam, disposable 37 dB Yes 100 pairs/box
3M 1270 Reusable silicone As per box label Yes, with case Pair
3M 1290 Reusable silicone As per box label Yes, with case Pair

MOQ 1 box.

FAQ
– Can foam earplugs be reused? — No, they become dirty and lose elasticity after 1 shift.
– Do you supply earmuffs? — 3M Peltor X series, to order.

Why is the threshold 85 dBA?

Under QCVN 24:2016/BYT, the permissible noise exposure level depends on duration: for every 3 dBA increase, the permissible time is halved. At no time may the maximum sound pressure level exceed 115 dBA.

Exposure time 8 hours 4 hours 2 hours 1 hour 30 minutes 15 minutes
Permissible level (dBA) 85 88 91 94 97 100

Noise-induced hearing loss accumulates gradually, is painless and irreversible — so earplugs must be worn consistently throughout the shift, not only when the machines are loudest.

SNR and NRR: reading the noise reduction rating correctly

  • SNR (European standard EN 352-2): for example, 3M 1100 has an SNR of 37 dB, with three frequency-band values H/M/L = 37/34/31 dB — earplugs attenuate low frequencies less than high frequencies.
  • NRR (US standard): the figure is usually lower than the SNR for the same product because the calculation method differs. Do not directly compare the SNR of one model with the NRR of another.
  • Real-world performance is lower than in the laboratory: according to 3M documentation, field attenuation is often only 1/3 to 1/2 of the test result. OSHA guidance applies a derating: (NRR − 7) ÷ 2. For example, an NRR of 29 dB counts as only about 11 dB of reduction.
  • The highest rating is not necessary: excessive attenuation makes it hard for workers to hear alarms and voices, so they tend to remove their earplugs. Choose a rating sufficient to bring the noise level at the ear below 85 dBA.

Fitting foam earplugs correctly: Roll – Pull – Hold

  1. Roll: roll the foam earplug into a thin, narrow cylinder.
  2. Pull: reach over your head with the other hand, pull the outer ear up and back to straighten the ear canal, and insert the earplug.
  3. Hold: keep your finger on the earplug until the foam has expanded to seal the ear canal; your own voice will sound muffled.
  4. Check: most of the earplug body should be inside the ear canal. Cup both hands tightly over your ears — if the noise drops noticeably further, the earplug is not sealed; refit it.

According to 3M, how the earplug is fitted affects real-world attenuation more than any calculation.

Disposable foam or reusable earplugs?

  • PU foam earplugs (3M 1100, 1110): slow-recovery foam that conforms closely to the ear canal, high attenuation; but they must be rolled by hand — hands contaminated with oil or metal dust can easily carry dirt into the ear.
  • Reusable multi-flange earplugs (3M 1270, 1290): pushed straight in, no rolling needed; washable, reusable many times, with a carrying case. 3M recommends the 1270 for moderate noise levels (up to 95 dBA as an 8-hour time-weighted average).
  • Store reusable earplugs in their case away from sunlight (UV degrades the material); replace them when the flanges are cracked, hardened or deformed.

Common mistakes

  • Inserting only the tip of the earplug loosely into the ear canal — attenuation remains very low.
  • Removing earplugs “for a moment” in noisy areas — a few minutes without protection significantly reduces the average protection over the whole shift.
  • Sharing earplugs, or reusing dirty foam earplugs.
