Sticky Paper Roller Refills & Handles
Equivalent names: “8 inch sticky roll”, “paper sticky lint roller”, “cleanroom lint roller”, “12 inch roller handle” — difference: all 5 widths in 2 colours + separate handles (buy refill rolls without buying the whole set), pre-cut tear lines, non-transferring adhesive.

A paper sticky lint roller = a multi-layer roll of adhesive-coated paper fitted on a handle and rolled to pick up dust, lint and hair from ESD garments before entering the cleanroom, as well as from workbenches, trays and flat product surfaces. When a layer is used up, tear it off along the pre-cut line. White is the standard; blue shows dust clearly for inspection. The plastic handle is bought separately for long-term use; 2–4″ wooden-handle versions with an integrated roll suit small spots; 0.6–1.2 m extension poles for rolling floors and low walls.

FAQ
– Does it leave adhesive on clothing? — Not when used correctly; the adhesive layer holds the dust and does not transfer to the fabric.
– What is the difference between white and blue? — Only the paper colour; blue shows dust clearly, same price.
– Will any handle fit? — The 38 mm core is the common standard; 76 mm cores are for machines and do not fit hand handles.
– How often should rolls be replaced? — 50 layers × 3–5 passes per layer; a busy cleanroom entrance uses ~1 roll/day.
Construction of a paper sticky lint roller
The lint roller was invented in 1956, when an American engineer wrapped masking tape around a paper core to remove lint from a suit. The principle is still the same today: a roll of paper coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive (single-sided, adhesive facing outward) wound on a core and mounted on a handle with a rotating spindle.
- Each turn of paper is one layer, with a pre-cut line for tearing it off once the outer layer is full of dust.
- The pressure-sensitive adhesive captures particles as it is pressed and rolled over the surface: most effective on lint, hair and coarse dust particles on fabric and flat surfaces.
- The back of the paper has a release coating so the roll unwinds and the adhesive does not stick back to the layer below.

Paper is a cellulose material; the torn edge of a paper layer can shed fibres. Paper rollers are therefore best suited to the preparation area before entering the cleanroom; inside the cleanroom, PE film should be used.
Rolling ESD garments at the cleanroom entrance
- Tear off the outermost layer if the roll has been left out of its bag for a long time — that layer has already collected airborne dust.
- Roll from top to bottom: hood, shoulders, chest, sleeves, body, trouser legs; pay attention to the collar, cuffs, pockets and seams — where lint and hair tend to collect.
- Overlap the passes; do not rub back and forth over one spot with an adhesive layer that is already full of dust.
- When the adhesive layer turns dull and no longer picks up dust, tear it off along the cut line and put it in a lidded bin.
Static note
Peeling off an adhesive paper layer separates two surfaces and generates charge, just like pulling tape — according to Desco, ordinary tape can generate over 1,000 V when pulled off the roll. Tear layers off in the gowning area, away from static-sensitive components; do not roll paper rollers directly on circuit boards or bare components.
Storage and common mistakes
- Keep rolls in a sealed bag or carton until use; store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight — the adhesive softens, flows or dries out if the storeroom is too hot.
- Do not keep rolling with an adhesive layer already full of dust — loosely held dust will fall back onto the garment.
- Do not use paper rollers on PCBs, glass or optical film — use a silicone roller and adhesive pad.
- Do not throw torn-off layers on the floor or bench — they are a dust source themselves.
