Selection guide
– Electronics lab, component QC → ESD laminate top (this model).
– General lab on a tight budget → melamine MDF top (standard); premium laminate costs more but resists scratches better.
– Chemistry lab, oils and grease → phenolic or SUS304 stainless steel top.
– Pharmaceutical cleanroom → stainless steel frame + one-piece stainless steel top with rounded corners.
– Only need an ordinary assembly bench → aluminium profile bench (AW-40) is cheaper.
Inspection & handover: weld inspection, levelling, ESD surface resistance measurement, handover report; 2D/3D drawings sent for approval before production.
FAQ
– 304 or 201 stainless steel? — 304 does not rust in chemical/humid environments; 201 is ~25 % cheaper but stains easily. PRIMEAG uses 304 for laboratories.
– Is the moisture-resistant MDF top water-resistant? — It withstands humidity and spills wiped up immediately; for prolonged standing water use phenolic/stainless steel.
– Do you make island benches (double-sided)? — Yes, a 4-leg frame in the middle of the room with a double-sided upper shelf unit.
– Lead time from drawing to delivery? — Drawing approval 2 days, production 10 days, installation 1 day.
Why a 304 stainless steel frame rather than 201?
Stainless steel resists rust thanks to a very thin chromium oxide film on the surface; this film self-repairs when scratched, provided the steel contains at least 10.5 % chromium. The two grades most common on the market differ mainly in nickel content:
| Grade | Nominal composition | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| 304 (“18/8”) | approx. 18 % Cr, 8 % Ni | Standard austenitic grade, good corrosion resistance in humid environments and mild chemicals |
| 201 (200 series) | approx. 16 % Cr, 3.5 % Ni, 5.5 % Mn | Replaces part of the nickel with manganese and nitrogen to cut cost; higher mechanical strength but poorer corrosion resistance than 304 |
The main enemy of stainless steel in a laboratory is chloride ions (salt, bleach, HCl acid): they cause pitting and crevice corrosion, which worsen with heat, acids, or solutions left standing in crevices. A lab frame therefore needs grade 304, TIG welds ground and cleaned, and as few water-trapping gaps as possible.
Choosing the worktop for the type of work
| Worktop | Construction | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESD laminate on moisture-resistant MDF | Dissipative surface layer + conductive layer beneath, earthed | Static control; resists flux, common solvents, hot solder | Do not expose for long periods to temperatures above 135 °C; avoid bleach, hydrogen peroxide, strong cleaners |
| Phenolic (compact) | Cellulose fibre core pressed with phenolic resin | Moisture-proof core, better chemical and heat resistance than laminate | Not a homogeneous solid like epoxy; integral sinks are not possible |
| 304 stainless steel | Stainless steel sheet clad over a core | Heat resistant, easy to clean and disinfect | Highly conductive — not for use as a work surface for ESD-sensitive components; sensitive to chlorides |
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends phenolic where laminate is not durable enough but the durability of an epoxy top is not yet required.

ESD laminate tops: resistance varies with humidity
Published data for one ESD laminate line (Nevamar) show that point-to-ground resistance rises as the air gets drier:
- 40–60 % RH: 10⁵ – 1×10⁷ Ω
- 20–40 % RH: 10⁷ – 1×10⁸ Ω
- 10–20 % RH: 10⁸ – 10⁹ Ω
Air-conditioned, dehumidified laboratories are usually drier than the shop floor — still within the Rg < 1×10⁹ Ω limit of ANSI/ESD S20.20 but closer to it, so measure periodically. The laminate is earthed through a flush-mounted brass stud passing through the conductive layer, wired to the bench’s common earth point.
Reference standards for laboratory benches
- SEFA 8 (USA): free-standing benches are static-load tested to no less than 600 lb (272 kg); cross members must not deflect more than 1/360 of the span and no more than 3.175 mm; 45° racking test; metal finishes are tested against 49 reagents for 1 hour, with laboratory grade allowing at most 4 level-3 results (pitting, blistering); hot water test at 88–96 °C. Testing must be carried out by a SEFA-accredited laboratory.
- EN 13150 (Europe): safety requirements, test methods and dimensional guidance for fixed benches, mobile units and bench-top shelving in laboratories; it does not cover fire requirements or worktop resistance.
If your project requires documentation to SEFA 8 or EN 13150, state this when sending your drawings so that the frame design and test plan can be matched to it.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Stainless steel frame: wipe with soap or a mild detergent and warm water, rinse with clean water, dry; rub along the grain of the finish.
- Do not let concentrated bleach or HCl-based cleaners contact the stainless steel; wipe up and rinse chloride-containing chemical spills immediately.
- Do not use steel wool or carbon steel brushes: iron particles embedded in the surface rust when damp, leaving stains that look like poor-quality stainless steel. If a metal brush is needed, use a stainless steel brush of the same grade or higher.
- Do not fix carbon steel screws directly into the stainless steel frame — galvanic corrosion easily occurs at the screw.
- Laminate top: do not use abrasive cleaners, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, toilet cleaners or oven cleaners; do not apply wax or silicone-containing polish to the ESD surface.
Common mistakes
- Choosing 201 stainless steel for a chemistry lab because it is cheap; after a few months stains and pitting appear around the welds.
- Using a stainless steel top for work on static-sensitive components.
- Placing hot plates or small dryers directly on the laminate top — a heat-resistant mat is needed.
- Mounting the bench against the wall without leaving a service gap behind for cables and gas lines.
