Poor workstation lighting: shelf-mounted LEDs and task lamps for assembly, sewing and inspection

Factory ceiling lighting typically delivers about 300 lux: enough for walking around, but not for assembling small components, sewing or inspection, which need 750–1,500 lux depending on the task. PRIMEAG adds light right at the station with LED fixtures mounted on the workbench shelf and task lamps, reducing eye strain and missed defects.

Summary
  • Measure first: place a lux meter on the work surface and measure at both the start and the end of the shift.
  • Station background lighting: an LED fixture mounted on the bench shelf, positioned in front of the operator so hands do not cast shadows.
  • Focused light: an articulated task lamp or an illuminated magnifier for very fine work and solder-joint inspection.
  • Light quality: color rendering index Ra ≥ 80, neutral white light, fixtures with a diffuser cover against glare.

How many lux are needed

The European standard for indoor workplace lighting (EN 12464-1) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Health regulation on workplace lighting (QCVN 22:2016/BYT) both set illuminance levels according to how fine the task is. The table below gives reference levels for orientation; for audits, check against the exact table of the standard your customer applies.

Type of workReference illuminance at the work surfaceSolution at the station

Rough assembly, packingabout 300 luxCeiling lights; add an LED fixture if the bench is far from a light

1. LED fixtures mounted on the workbench shelf

The most effective approach is to bring the light source down close to the work surface. The powered version of the lean pipe workbench (plastic-coated steel pipe, Φ28) comes with 2 pre-installed 0.6 m LED tubes, a 6-socket power strip and a switch. For existing benches, you can add moisture-proof, waterproof LED lights in 0.6 m (10 W/tube) or 1.2 m (20 W/tube) lengths, with a sealed plastic housing and diffuser cover. Mount the fixture in front of the operator’s head, about 600–800 mm above the work surface; a fixture behind the operator casts hand shadows onto the product.

2. Task lamps where focused light is needed

Hand soldering, placing small components, threading needles and checking seams need an additional articulated task lamp that can be turned to the exact working point. For solder-joint inspection, use a 5D/8D clamp-on magnifier with an LED ring light from our inspection equipment range. PRIMEAG supplies task lamps that clamp onto lean pipe or aluminum profile bench frames.

3. Light quality, not just brightness

  • Glare: keep bare tubes out of the line of sight; use fixtures with a diffuser cover.
  • Color rendering: choose lights with Ra ≥ 80; for color checking of fabric, wires or LEDs, choose a higher Ra.
  • Color temperature: neutral white light of about 4000–5000 K is comfortable for a full shift.
  • Work surface: glossy surfaces reflect glare; matte green or gray ESD mats reduce it.

Project reference

At a Taiwanese-invested electronic components plant in Da Nang (2024–2025), PRIMEAG supplied about 500 ESD workbenches with lights, power outlets and grounding cords, delivered in 4 batches. For bench, rack and lighting layout on electronics lines, see choosing workbenches for electronics lines.

Where to start

  1. Measure lux at the work surface at 3–5 representative stations.
  2. Mark the stations below the required level; ask operators which stations cause eye strain or missed defects.
  3. Send PRIMEAG photos of the benches and frame dimensions so we can select fixtures, clamps and wiring routes.

Lead time for standard-design benches with lights is 5–7 working days; warranty is 3 years on the bench frame and 12 months on lights and power outlets.

Frequently asked questions

Can lights be added to existing workbenches? Yes. 0.6 m or 1.2 m LED fixtures clamp onto the crossbar of the shelf on lean pipe or aluminum profile benches; PRIMEAG can pre-wire them with a switch and power outlets.

Should the light be in front of or behind the operator? In front, slightly above head height. A light placed behind the operator or directly overhead casts shadows of the hands and body onto the product.

Do LED lights on the bench affect ESD protection? The fixture sits on the shelf and does not touch components, so it does not affect the ESD work surface; the frame and work surface remain grounded as usual.
