ESD arm sleeves

Code: CH-SLEEVE · Specification: ESD (anti-static) elasticated arm sleeves. Delivery: in stock, delivered within 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); lead time for bulk orders is confirmed with the quotation.

Also known as: “anti-static arm sleeves”, “ESD elastic sleeves”, “cleanroom sleeves” — the difference: 8 colours to identify departments, elastic at the 2 ends that does not slip, same fabric as the uniform.
Common specification: sky blue, orange, red.

Sleeves worn from the wrist to above the elbow with short-sleeved shirts in the EPA: they keep the forearm from touching components, keep shirt sleeves clean and provide colour identification. Carbon polyester fabric, elastic cuffs at both ends.

What are arm sleeves for?

ESD arm sleeves are tubes of fabric with elastic at both ends, worn from the wrist to above the elbow. In electronics factories they serve three purposes:

  1. Covering personal shirt sleeves or sleeves not made of ESD fabric — the area that most often touches bench tops, trays and PCBs during work.
  2. Limiting direct contact between forearm skin and the product: sweat, skin oil and salt left on metal, glass and optical surfaces.
  3. Identification: one colour per department or management level helps line supervisors spot strangers entering the EPA immediately.

How the fabric controls static

According to the ESD Association (ESDA), ordinary clothing is insulated from the body, so charge on the fabric cannot drain through the skin, even when the operator wears a grounded wrist strap. Ordinary synthetic fabrics charge strongly when rubbed against bench tops, chairs and plastic bags. ESD arm sleeves use polyester woven with carbon conductive fibres in stripes, so charge does not concentrate at one point but spreads along the fibre grid.

The elastic cuff at the wrist fits snugly against the skin. When the operator is grounded through a wrist strap, this contact area gives the conductive fibre grid an additional path to drain charge through the body. However, this is not a verified groundable garment system under the standards — sleeves are only a supplementary accessory and do not replace long-sleeved ESD garments where the customer requires them.

Why conductive fabric should not be left “floating”

A conductive object that is not grounded is called an isolated conductor. The revised ANSI/ESD S20.20 limits the voltage on isolated conductors in the EPA to no more than 35 V. If a sleeve with a carbon fibre grid is separated from the skin (worn over a thick sweater or long gloves), its conductive part has no path to drain. So wear it correctly: the wrist elastic against the skin, not over a thick insulating layer.

Wearing with an ESD wrist strap

  • Wear the wrist strap directly on the skin of the wrist, with the sleeve outside it or pushed further up — never let the sleeve fabric sit between the strap’s stainless steel plate and the skin.
  • Test the wrist strap on the tester while fully dressed with sleeves and gloves, to catch cases where the strap has been pushed out of place.
  • Do not use sleeves with overly tight elastic: they are uncomfortable, and workers tend to pull them down over the wrist strap.

Testing and monitoring

  • Fabric resistance is measured with the test method for static control garments ANSI/ESD STM2.1 (point-to-point resistance on the fabric).
  • “Ordinary” sleeves (polyester without carbon fibres) are cheaper but only keep things clean and provide colour coding; they are not measurable as ESD — ask clearly when buying.
  • Spot-check a few pairs after each wash cycle and record by colour and batch.

Washing, storage and replacement

  • Wash with the same process as ESD garments: clean water, neutral detergent; avoid chlorine bleach and fabric softener.
  • Replace when the elastic is stretched (the sleeve slides down to the wrist), the fabric is worn or torn, or it no longer passes measurement.
  • Issue each person at least 2 pairs to rotate between washes.

Common mistakes

  • Using sleeves instead of long-sleeved ESD garments in high-requirement areas (ISO 5–6 cleanrooms) — as noted in this page’s FAQ.
  • Wearing sleeves over wool jackets or windbreakers — the charging layer is still right underneath.
  • Letting the sleeve cover the ESD wrist strap.
  • Sharing sleeves between several people without regular washing.

FAQ

  • Can arm sleeves replace a long-sleeved shirt? — They do not replace long-sleeved ESD garments; sleeves are only a supplementary accessory when wearing short-sleeved ESD shirts in standard EPAs. ISO 5–6 uses long-sleeved garments/coveralls.
  • Are they really ESD? — The carbon-fibre type has resistance measurable per ANSI/ESD STM2.1; the ordinary (non-carbon) type is cheaper and only keeps things clean and provides colour coding. Quotations and delivery notes clearly state the carbon type.
