– Can a standard PVC strip curtain be used at an EPA door? — No; standard PVC charges up when people walk through; use the ESD version.
– Do you supply and install the curtain rail? — Yes, stainless steel/aluminum rail kits + hooks, installed on site.
Flexible PVC: why it is clear and soft, and why it charges up
Flexible PVC film and strip curtains are PVC resin blended with plasticizers (mainly phthalates). The plasticizer content determines softness: according to compiled data, PVC containing 33 % DINP has a hardness of about Shore A 84 and an elongation at break of about 295 %; at 44 % DINP hardness drops to Shore A 66. Low-molecular-weight plasticizers such as DEHP and DBP are being restricted; DINP and DIDP are considered safer — ask about the formulation when using them in food or medical areas.
Flexible PVC has a volume resistivity of about 10¹²–10¹⁵ Ω·m, i.e. it is an insulator. When people or trolleys brush past, standard curtain strips charge up and cannot discharge by themselves. ESD curtains contain conductive additives that bring resistance down to 10⁶–10⁹ Ω (the dissipative range).
ESD curtains at EPA entrances
- According to the ESD Association (ESDA), insulators cannot lose their charge by being grounded; in an EPA, unnecessary insulators must be removed or ionization used to neutralize them. A standard PVC curtain hanging right at the EPA entrance is a charge source to avoid.
- ESD curtains only work when grounded: a metal hanging rail, hooks in contact with the strips and a wire to the area ground point.
- Add the curtains to the periodic verification checklist of your ESD program: measure resistance with a high-range resistance meter at 10 V/100 V, including the areas that get rubbed or dirty most.

The greater the overlap between strips, the better they seal against wind, dust and cold, but the heavier they are to pass through; doors with frequent forklift traffic need thicker strips and a sturdy rail.
Notes for bonding, covering and cleanroom use
- Plasticizers are not chemically bonded to the resin, so they can migrate to the surface and into the adhesive layer, gradually weakening the bond. When bonding PVC film to frames or surfaces, choose a plasticizer-resistant adhesive (e.g. nitrile rubber based) and test first.
- New vinyl products outgas during the initial period; for demanding cleanrooms, consult PRIMEAG before using PVC film as partitions.
- PVC has poor resistance to some chemicals; clean with mild soapy water and test on a sample before using solvents.
Fire safety and service life
- The chlorine in PVC makes it flame retardant, but when it burns PVC releases corrosive hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. Do not hang curtains or film close to ovens, welding machines or heat lamps.
- Replace curtain strips when they become cloudy, heavily scratched, cracked, stiff or brittle: cloudy curtains stop forklift drivers and pedestrians from seeing each other — a collision risk.
- ESD curtains: do not clean with products containing silicone or wax; re-measure resistance after cleaning or replacing strips.
Common mistakes
- Installing standard PVC curtains at EPA doors because they “look like” ESD curtains.
- Installing ESD curtains on an ungrounded rail.
- Using clear PVC film to cover component work surfaces — the film is insulating and charges up.
- Choosing thin strips for forklift doors: the strips get caught and tear quickly and must be replaced early.
