FAQ
– White residue around the bond line? — Caused by adhesive vapour condensing; use 460/403 or improve ventilation.
– PE, PP or PTFE will not bond? — Apply primer 770, then use 406. Silicone is not in the material list of the 770 TDS — trial samples are needed.
– Storage after opening? — Close tightly and keep in a cool, dry place at room temperature; do not put opened bottles back in the refrigerator, to prevent moisture condensing into the adhesive.

How instant adhesives cure

LOCTITE 4xx instant adhesives are one-component cyanoacrylates. According to Henkel’s TDSs, moisture on the surface and in the air initiates the curing reaction; therefore:

  • Thin bond gaps cure fast, thick gaps cure much more slowly. Henkel states that 416 and 425 give the best results at a gap of about 0.05 mm.
  • Higher humidity speeds up curing; dry air-conditioned rooms and cleanrooms slow it down.
  • The “fixture time” on the TDS is when the bond reaches 0.1 N/mm² (measured at 22 °C / 50 % RH) — enough to handle, but not the final strength. The adhesive continues to cure for at least 24 hours before reaching full chemical and solvent resistance.
  • An activator speeds up curing on large gaps, but Henkel notes it may reduce the final strength — test beforehand.

Reference data from Henkel TDS

Code Chemistry Brookfield viscosity, 25 °C (mPa·s) Typical fixture time
401 Ethyl 100–120 Steel, aluminium, rubber < 5 s; PC 5–10 s
403 Alkoxyethyl (low odour, low blooming) 1,100–1,650 Steel 20–45 s
406 Ethyl 15–25 ABS, PVC, rubber < 5 s
416 Ethyl 1,150–1,500 Steel 20–50 s
425 Ethyl / ester (low-strength threadlocking) 40–80 Fixture under 2 min
454 Ethyl, gel 18,000–40,000 (20 rpm) Steel 30–60 s; ABS < 5 s
460 Alkoxyethyl (low odour, low blooming) 30–50 Steel 10–30 s
480 Ethyl, black, rubber-toughened 100–200 Steel 60–120 s; aluminium 10–30 s
495 Ethyl 20–60 Steel 5–10 s; aluminium < 5 s

Strength example: 401 achieves a shear strength of about 20 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel (ISO 4587). Henkel describes 480 as a rubber-toughened adhesive with increased flexibility, peel strength and impact resistance. 425 is used for low-strength locking of metal/plastic screws and for tamperproofing potentiometer adjusting screws, with a typical operating temperature range of −54 to +85 °C.

Bonding hard-to-bond plastics: primer 770

LOCTITE SF 770 is a primer that helps cyanoacrylate adhesives adhere to low-energy surfaces. Henkel recommends it only for PE, PP, PTFE and thermoplastic rubber, and not where the joint needs high peel strength. Application: brush or spray a thin layer onto the polyolefin surface only, let it dry, then bond immediately; whether the primer has been applied can be checked with a 365 nm UV lamp.

Blooming, odour and safety

  • White residue (blooming) is adhesive vapour condensing around the bond. Henkel designed 403 and 460 (alkoxyethyl-based) to be low-odour and low-blooming for poorly ventilated locations.
  • Do not wear cotton/wool gloves when using instant adhesives: cyanoacrylate reacts with cotton and wool in a strongly exothermic reaction that can cause burns and white smoke — a point worth stressing in factories used to cotton gloves. Use nitrile gloves.
  • Skin bonding: do not pull apart forcefully; soak in warm soapy water or apply acetone around the bonded area.
  • A small proportion of people exposed for long periods become sensitised to the adhesive vapour — provide local ventilation.
  • Do not use in pure oxygen systems or for sealing chlorine or strong oxidisers (Henkel).

Correct application

  1. Clean and degrease the surfaces and let them dry.
  2. If using an activator: apply it to one surface only; do not apply it to a surface that has been primed.
  3. Apply the adhesive to the other surface (not the one with activator), just enough to form a thin film. Henkel notes not to spread the adhesive with paper or a brush.
  4. Join the parts within a few seconds and align them accurately straight away, as the fixture time is short; hold still until fixed.

Storage and common mistakes

  • According to the TDS, unopened instant adhesives are best stored at 2–8 °C in a dry place; outside this range the adhesive properties may be affected. Allow the bottle to reach room temperature before opening so that moisture does not condense at the nozzle.
  • Do not pour unused dispensed adhesive back into the bottle — Henkel warns that dispensed adhesive may be contaminated.
  • Applying a thick layer to make it “stronger”: thick gaps cure slowly, are brittle and bloom easily.
  • Using instant adhesives on parts exposed to heat or long-term water immersion: the TDS shows strength drops as temperature rises and with humidity ageing — choose an epoxy or anaerobic adhesive for harsh conditions.
  • Bonding PP or PE without primer, or using primer on joints that must resist peel.

LOCTITE product catalogue 2025 (Henkel, Japanese edition, 52 pages, code C56-2502S): data tables for threadlocking, thread sealing, retaining, flange sealing, activators, instant adhesives and anti-seize. The data on this page has been cross-checked against the 2025 catalogue. However, 401, 406, 454 and 495 in that catalogue are Japan-market versions (J suffix, with data different from the international versions), so the table on this page still follows Henkel’s international TDS. The Vietnamese 2008 edition is still useful for the application-based selection charts, but some of its figures are out of date.
