PE stretch film for wrapping goods: 25 cm (1.2–2 kg/roll) on a small core for hand-wrapping cartons and bundling pipes; 50 cm (2.5–3 kg) for pallet wrapping. Low-tack PE surface protection film (blue/clear) applied temporarily to stainless steel, aluminium, glass and laminate sheets during processing/transport, peels off cleanly — PRIMEAG uses it to protect ESD bench tops on delivery. FAQ
– How long can protection film stay on and still peel cleanly? — Remove it as soon as possible after delivery; the maximum dwell time follows the film supplier’s recommendation. Standard film is not UV resistant, so do not leave it in sunlight — if it must be stored outdoors, order the UV-resistant type.
– Is ESD PE film available? — Yes, pink antistatic film (it only reduces charge generation and does not provide static shielding), made to order.

PE stretch film: material and how the film holds the load

The most common pallet wrap is made from LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene). The film does not hold the load with adhesive but through elastic recovery: when stretched and wrapped, the film tends to contract and “hug” the load. Both sides of the film have cling so the layers stick to each other.

According to technical summaries on stretch film, many films can stretch about 500 % before breaking, but in use they are stretched only 100–300 %. Hand wrapping usually does not reach this level of pre-stretch, so heavy loads or pallets travelling long distances need more wraps.

Correct pallet wrapping

  • Containment force matters more than the number of wraps: Lantech defines it as the force “hugging” and holding the load, equal to the number of film layers multiplied by the tension in each layer. Containment force must be even from bottom to top — wrapping thickly only at the top and bottom and thinly in the middle still lets the upper layers shift.
  • Lock the load to the pallet: twist the last few centimetres of film into a rope and wrap it just below the edge of the pallet top deck. Lantech advises against wrapping down to the pallet feet, because the forks will puncture the film and the tear will spread.
  • No goods overhanging the pallet edge; trim the film tail neatly so it does not catch on forklifts or conveyors.
  • Guidance on selecting and using stretch film is given in ASTM D4649.

Surface protection film: how to use it so it peels without residue

  • Adhesion must match surface roughness (Nitto): smooth surfaces such as glass and mirror stainless steel need low adhesion; rough, textured surfaces need higher adhesion.
  • The surface must be free of oil before application: residual oil causes contamination and leaves adhesive behind on removal (Nitto).
  • Do not press too hard when applying — the film edges tend to lift by themselves.
  • Surfaces that will be painted, plated, engraved or bonded: check for adhesive residue after peeling. On painted surfaces, the film may pull off the paint depending on the paint curing conditions.
  • Temperature: one European film manufacturer (Welser) recommends removing the film at 15–40 °C and storing rolls at around 20 ± 5 °C, away from sunlight and high humidity.
  • Sunlight (UV): ages the adhesive and makes the film hard to remove. Standard film is for indoor use; goods that must be kept outdoors need UV-resistant film.

Bubble wrap and anti-static bubble wrap

Bubble wrap is made from polyethylene film, consisting of a bubble-forming layer laminated to a flat layer. The most common bubble size is about 10 mm. Wrap several layers to reduce shock and vibration; one layer is used for scratch protection.

  • Pink ESD bubble wrap contains an antistatic additive and only reduces charge generation from friction.
  • No static shielding: external electric fields or discharges still pass through to the components. ESDA requires packaging used to transport static-sensitive components outside the EPA to include a shielding layer (shielding bag). Use pink bubble wrap as cushioning outside the shielding bag.
  • The antistatic additive has a limited shelf life: for example, one pink bag manufacturer recommends use within 2 years of the date of manufacture.
