FAQ
– Is epoxy floor paint ESD? — The standard version is not; ESD floors use ESD PVC or conductive epoxy (special order).
– Does spray paint adhere to powder-coated racks? — Lightly sand with P400 first, then spray.

Floor marking colours: what do the standards say?

Many factories think there is a mandatory “floor marking colour standard”. In fact:

  • OSHA 1910.176(a) only requires permanent aisles to be “appropriately marked”. It does not specify colours.
  • OSHA 1910.144 sets the basic safety colours: red for fire protection equipment, flammable liquid containers and emergency stop buttons; yellow for caution and marking physical hazards.
  • OSHA interpretation letter: aisle lines 2–6 inches wide are recommended; 2 inches (about 5 cm) or more is acceptable; colour and line style are up to the employer.

As there is no mandatory standard, factories should issue an internal colour chart and apply it consistently. A common suggested scheme (per Brady, widely used in 5S):

2-component epoxy paint: understand it to apply it correctly

  • The mixing ratio is mandatory: epoxy resin and hardener react chemically in the ratio set by the manufacturer (by weight or by volume, stated on the TDS of each product). Mixing “by eye” leaves the paint soft, tacky and less chemical-resistant.
  • Pot life: the reaction is exothermic; the larger the batch, the faster it heats up and sets. Mix only what can be used within the allowed time.
  • Curing temperature: without enough heat, the polymer network is incomplete — hardness and chemical resistance drop. Avoid application in cold weather or on damp substrates.
  • UV: epoxy chalks and yellows in sunlight; amine-based epoxies yellow over time even without sunlight. In sunlit areas, add a UV-resistant PU topcoat.
  • Adhesion: the surface must be clean and abraded; paint applied over glossy or oily surfaces peels off in sheets.

Spray paint: use it correctly for good adhesion

  • Shake well until the mixing ball rattles clearly in the can, so the pigment disperses evenly.
  • Lightly sand and wipe off oil before spraying (the FAQ gives P400 for powder-coated surfaces).
  • Spray several thin coats instead of one thick coat to avoid runs.
  • Aerosol cans contain flammable propellant: do not spray near flames, soldering irons or hot machines; do not puncture or store at high temperatures; empty the can before disposal.

Notes for ESD protected areas (EPA)

  • Ordinary paint is an insulating layer. Touch-up spray on ESD bench tops, racks or trolleys can remove the charge drainage path at that spot; use ESD paint/materials, or limit it to a small area and re-measure.
  • Do not mark lines with ordinary paint on ESD PVC floors: painted lines are insulating patches on the floor and very hard to remove. Use ESD floor tape or lines welded into the floor.
  • Ordinary epoxy paint is not anti-static; ESD floors use dedicated conductive epoxy or ESD PVC flooring.

Occupational safety

  • Uncured epoxy resin irritates skin and eyes; repeated contact can cause sensitisation and dermatitis. Wear nitrile gloves, safety glasses and long sleeves.
  • Solvent vapour and dust from sanding paint that is not fully cured harm the respiratory system — ventilate well and use an organic vapour respirator when painting indoors.
  • Do not pour leftover paint or solvent down drains: liquid resin is toxic to aquatic life.
