Wrist Strap / Footwear Testers & Surface Resistance Meters

Common specifications: OTS1801D, SL-030.
Delivery: stocked items are delivered in 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); made-to-order items 3–7 working days; availability is confirmed with the quotation.

Three groups of instruments for daily in-house ESD auditing. Wrist strap + footwear testers (OTS1801D, ZYX-209): installed at the EPA entrance; operators wear the strap / step on the foot plate and a green/red light indicates pass/fail against the 0.75–35 MΩ window; results are logged. Surface resistance meters (SL-030 handheld, SL-031/FMX-003 with 5 lb electrodes, measuring 10³–10¹² Ω at 10/100 V): for checking mats, benches, floors, gloves and bins; measurements per S4.1/STM7.1 require 5 lb electrodes (SL-031/FMX-003). Electrostatic voltage meters (Supra 518, FMX-004): measure charge on PCBs, films and people, 0–20 kV. TR1800: digital surface resistance meter 10³–10¹² Ω (10/100 V) with two 5 lb electrodes and temperature–humidity readout, per S4.1/S7.1 — the meter PRIMEAG uses for its free on-site ESD testing. ST4800: floor–person resistance meter per STM97.1.

FAQ
– Where should the wrist strap tester be placed? — At the EPA entrance; test once per shift and log the result.
– Can a mat be measured with a multimeter? — No; 10/100 V and 5 lb electrodes per S4.1 are required.
– How often is calibration needed? — Every 12 months; PRIMEAG can send instruments out for calibration on your behalf.

Minimum ESD test equipment for a factory

According to the ESD Association (ESDA), to self-assess a static control programme a factory needs at minimum:

  • Electrostatic field meter — detects charged objects.
  • Wide-range resistance meter using a 10 V or 100 V test voltage, measuring from 1×10³ to 1×10¹² Ω, with suitable electrodes.
  • AC outlet / ground tester — checks equipment ground wires and outlet wiring in the EPA.

Additional equipment includes wrist strap and footwear testers, a charged plate monitor to measure ioniser balance and discharge time, and data loggers.

Wrist strap tester: what does it check?

When an operator wearing a strap plugs the cord into the tester and touches the electrode, the tester measures the entire circuit: the ground connection, the coiled cord, the 1 MΩ resistor, the cord–strap connection, the strap–skin contact, and the body resistance from the wrist to the hand touching the electrode.

  • According to ANSI/ESD S1.1, if no continuous monitor is used, wrist straps must be tested daily while being worn; the upper limit is nominally 10 MΩ or set by the user. The ANSI/ESD S20.20 limit for the person–ground system is < 3.5×10⁷ Ω.
  • The lower limit (typically 0.75 MΩ) detects a cord shorted across the current-limiting resistor — which removes the protection for the person.
  • S20.20 requires a log confirming that personnel have tested their personal grounding devices.
  • Woven elastic straps with conductive yarn should additionally be tested about weekly by holding the inside of the band — conductive yarn gradually loses conductivity over time.

Footwear and footwear–floor system testing

  • When ESD footwear + flooring is used to ground personnel, both limits must be met: person–footwear–floor resistance to ground < 1×10⁹ Ω (ANSI/ESD STM97.1) and body voltage while walking < 100 V (ANSI/ESD STM97.2).
  • The footwear tester is placed at the EPA entrance; test and log on entering the area. Testers with a dual foot plate measure each foot separately and can detect a single faulty shoe.
  • Disposable conductive heel grounders are for single use only.

Measuring worksurfaces and mats with a resistance meter

Periodic verification procedure per ESD TR53 (Desco guidance):

  1. Place a 5 lb electrode in the middle of the worksurface and measure resistance to ground (RTG) at 10 V, waiting for the reading to stabilise.
  2. If the result is below 1×10⁶ Ω, record it and continue; if it is equal to or higher than that, switch to 100 V and measure again.
  3. Also measure areas that are frequently worn or dirty, not just clean areas.
  4. When troubleshooting, measure point-to-point (RTT) with two electrodes.

The S20.20 limit for worksurfaces is < 1×10⁹ Ω; the S4.1 guidance suggests 10⁶–10⁹ Ω. Note: if the ground cord contains a 1 MΩ resistor, the RTG value can mask a worksurface whose RTT is too low — measure RTT for each type and colour of worksurface.

Electrostatic field and voltage meters

A field meter shows whether an object is charged. Simple types give only a rough indication, which is enough to find insulators (plastic bags, plastic trays, adhesive tape) in the EPA and to check ioniser effectiveness. Quantitative measurement of ion balance and discharge time requires a charged plate monitor.

Frequency and calibration

  • ESDA states that compliance verifications are typically performed monthly; some experts recommend at least 6 times a year per department. Reduce the frequency when results are stable and increase it when failures recur.
  • Floors must be re-measured after every maintenance or polishing.
  • Test instruments must be calibrated according to the manufacturer’s recommendations; wrist strap testers and continuous monitors also need periodic checks. Field measurements should be correlated with laboratory measurements.

Common mistakes

  • Testing a wrist strap that is not being worn, or worn over a sleeve.
  • Measuring a worksurface immediately after wiping it with a cleaning solution.
  • Connecting the tester to an outlet whose ground wire has not been checked.
  • Having a tester but not keeping a log — nothing to prove at audit.
