Tyvek garments: material and what the certifications mean

Tyvek is a DuPont non-woven fabric made from flash-spun high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fibres: there is no coating to peel off, it blocks fine particles yet still lets moisture vapour escape. European-certified Tyvek coveralls are Category III PPE and are usually marked with:

Marking Meaning
Type 5 Protection against airborne dust and solid particles
Type 6 Protection against light liquid splashes
EN 14126 Barrier against biological agents (fluids, particles, infective aerosols)
EN 1073-2 Protection against radioactive particulate contamination — not against ionising radiation
EN 1149-5 Antistatic treatment; surface resistance < 2.5×10⁹ Ω at 25 % humidity (per DuPont)
  • Antistatic treatment per EN 1149-5 is meant to reduce the risk of static sparks in flammable environments, not to protect components the way ESD garments do in an EPA.
  • Limits: the fabric melts at about 135 °C and is not flame-resistant — do not wear it for welding, cutting or near flames. It does not protect against pressurised liquids; that requires Type 3 garments (Tychem).
  • The label on the garment is what counts: under the same “Tyvek 400” name, the US version and the European-certified version may carry different certifications.

Nomex/aramid flame-resistant clothing and EN ISO 11612 codes

According to DuPont, Nomex’s flame resistance is built into the molecular structure of the fibre, not an added chemical treatment, so it is not lost in washing and the fibre does not melt or drip in a flame. Performance codes per EN ISO 11612:

  • A1/A2: limited flame spread (mandatory).
  • B: convective heat; C: radiant heat (near furnaces); D: molten aluminium splash; E: molten iron splash; F: contact heat. The higher the number, the higher the protection level.
  • Welding work usually also requires EN ISO 11611 and attention to level E (molten iron slag).

Underlayers should be cotton; synthetic fibres can melt and stick to the skin when hot.

Lead radiation protection aprons

  • Lead aprons usually have a lead equivalence of 0.25 / 0.35 / 0.5 mm Pb; at tube voltages of 70–100 kV, about 0.5–5 % of the radiation passes through.
  • Wrap-around types overlap at the front, giving 0.5 mm Pb at the front and 0.25 mm at the back.
  • Do not fold lead aprons — the lead layer cracks at the fold; hang them on a dedicated rack.
  • Check aprons by X-ray imaging at least once a year; reference service life is about 10 years, and cracks typically appear after about 5 years of use.

Full-body safety harnesses: regulations and inspection

QCVN 23:2014/BLDTBXH (based on the TCVN 7802 series) governs personal fall arrest systems:

  • Full-body harness for a single user weighing up to 100 kg; it does not apply to chest belts, waist belts or systems without an energy absorber.
  • Lanyard + energy absorber: type 1 for a maximum free fall of 1.8 m, maximum arrest force 4.0 kN; type 2 for a maximum free fall of 4.0 m, maximum arrest force 6.0 kN.

Guidance from the HSE (UK) on inspecting lanyards:

  1. Before each use: run the lanyard through your hands, looking at and feeling its entire length.
  2. Detailed inspection by a competent person at least every 6 months; every 3 months for frequent use in harsh environments; record it in a log.
  3. Discard when: edge cuts of 1 mm or more, damaged stitching, discolouration, softening from chemicals, glazed hard fibres from heat, chalky surface from UV, or a partially deployed energy absorber.
  4. A lanyard that has arrested a fall must not be reused — destroy it or return it to the manufacturer.

General notes when buying this product group

  • Require labels and certifications matching the standard marked on the garment; firefighting suits must follow the models and inspection requirements of current fire safety regulations.
  • Record expiry dates and periodic inspection schedules (lead aprons, harnesses) in the PPE register so it is ready for audits.

FAQ

  • Is Tyvek anti-static? — Versions meeting EN 1149-5 have antistatic treatment (measured per EN 1149-1) to reduce the risk of static sparks; they do not replace ESD garments in an EPA.
  • Harness inspection? — Visual check before each use; detailed inspection by a competent person at least every 6 months (HSE recommendation).
