FAQ
– What dioptre magnifier do I need? — 5D (2.25×) for long sessions; 8D (3×) for inspecting small solder joints.
– Do the scales come with a calibration certificate? — Yes, PRIMEAG arranges 12-month calibration on your behalf.
Magnifiers: what is the difference between “D” and “×”?
The “D” (dioptre) is the optical power of the lens. Nominal magnification is calculated with the formula M = D/4 + 1, based on a conventional near point of the eye of 25 cm. Therefore:
| Dioptre | Nominal magnification | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| 3D | 1.75× | Reading labels, prolonged visual inspection |
| 5D | 2.25× | Visual inspection, assembly for many hours |
| 8D | 3× | Inspecting small solder joints |
Actual magnification depends on where the lens is held and on the user’s eyes. The stronger a simple magnifier, the narrower the field of view and the greater the edge distortion; when a stable magnification above about 10× is needed (IC leads, cracks), switch to a stereo microscope.
Calipers: how accurate are they really?
- A typical 150 mm digital caliper has a resolution of 0.01 mm but an accuracy of about ±0.02 mm; longer calipers are less accurate — about ±0.03 mm for 100–200 mm and ±0.04 mm for 200–300 mm. Do not confuse the decimal places on the display with accuracy.
- Four measuring modes: outside (large jaws), inside (small jaws), depth (depth rod), step (end face of the caliper).
- Measuring force affects the result: squeezing too hard gives a smaller reading, too lightly a larger one. Micrometers have a ratchet that limits the force, so they repeat better.
- Check the zero before measuring: close the jaws, wipe them clean, set to 0. A caliper that has been dropped or knocked may no longer return to zero — it must be sent for calibration or repair.
- Digital calipers are sensitive to oil, coolant and dust; mechanical (vernier) calipers are robust and need no battery but are harder to read.
Electronic scales: what causes errors
- Draughts and airflow: 0.01 g balances are affected by air-conditioning and fans — use a draught shield and do not place them under an air outlet.
- Temperature: the item being weighed must be at room temperature; hot items create convection currents, cold items collect condensation and cause errors.
- Static electricity: plastic cups, PS trays and reels build up charge that creates an attractive force with the scale — the reading keeps jumping. Use metal trays, ESD trays, or an ionizer (code EI) to neutralise before weighing.
- Vibration, uneven surfaces: the scale must be levelled with its bubble level and placed on a rigid surface.
- Electronic scales must be recalibrated at the place of installation, because gravitational acceleration varies with location; after that, check periodically with traceable reference weights.
Calibration and legal verification
- Quality management systems (ISO 9001, IATF 16949) require measuring equipment used for product acceptance to have traceable calibration to national/international standards, a status label and records.
- In Vietnam, scales used for trade and for the handover of goods are subject to legal verification under metrology law (check against the current list of measuring instruments requiring verification); scales used internally (component counting, process checks) are usually calibrated at intervals set by the plant itself — typically 12 months.
- Between calibrations, run quick daily/weekly checks with reference weights, gauge blocks and master pins, and record them in a log.
Using measuring equipment in ESD areas
- The plastic housings of digital calipers, barcode scanners and scales are insulators. Do not place them close to bare components; in highly sensitive areas choose equipment with ESD housings or use an ionizer.
- Barcode scanners and label printers placed on an ESD bench should have properly earthed power cords.
Common mistakes
- Treating resolution as accuracy.
- Not re-zeroing; measuring parts that still have burrs or are oily.
- Weighing goods in charged plastic trays or under an air-conditioning outlet.
- Still using equipment that is overdue for calibration to make pass/fail decisions.
