FAQ
– How does 3M 7447 differ from sandpaper? — 7447 is grit-coated nylon fibre, soft, leaves no deep scratches and is reusable; sandpaper cuts more aggressively.
How sandpaper is made
Sandpaper consists of three parts: the backing, the abrasive grain and the bonding agent that holds the grain on the backing.
- Backing: paper (by weight A, C, D, E, F — A is the thinnest, F the thickest), cloth (J, X, Y — used for rolls and belts), PET film (very uniform thickness, for ultra-fine grits), vulcanised fibre (sanding discs).
- Abrasive grain: aluminium oxide — durable, inexpensive, used for wood and metal; silicon carbide — hard, sharp, available in very fine grits, commonly used for wet sandpaper; ceramic, zirconia — the sharpest and most durable, used for heavy stock removal; garnet — wood finishing.
- Closed coat and open coat: closed-coat sandpaper has about 90–95 % of the surface covered with grain, cuts fast and suits hard materials. Open-coat sandpaper is about 50–70 % covered, clogs less and suits softwood and paint.
What is the P grit grade?
The P number (P60, P400, P1000…) is the grit grade of the European FEPA system, standardised in ISO 6344. The higher the number, the finer the grit. The US uses the ANSI/CAMI system and Japan uses JIS. These systems are not one-to-one equivalent in the fine grades, so compare within the same system when changing suppliers.
Wet sandpaper (wet/dry) has a waterproof backing and is used with water: the water carries away the swarf, reduces clogging and gives a smoother surface. 3M introduced this type of sandpaper under the name “Wetordry” in 1921.
Scotch-Brite hand pads: how do they differ from sandpaper?
Scotch-Brite hand pads are made of non-woven nylon fibre with abrasive grain bonded to the fibres. The pads are soft, conform to curved surfaces and can be used dry or with water or solvents. According to 3M, the pads do not rust, do not shed metal particles and can be rinsed and reused — suitable for matt finishing and removing rust from stainless steel without the iron contamination caused by steel wool.
| 3M code | Colour | Abrasive grain | Grade | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7440 | Tan | Aluminium oxide | Medium | Heavy grinding and levelling |
| 7446 | Grey | Silicon carbide | Medium | Levelling, blending |
| 7447 | Maroon | Aluminium oxide | Very Fine | General purpose: cleaning, sanding before painting, matt finishing |
| 7448 | Grey | Silicon carbide | Ultra Fine | Fine finishing |
| 7445 | White | Flint | Ultra fine | Light cleaning |
Cut-off and grinding wheels: safety first
- Standards: in Europe, bonded abrasive wheels follow EN 12413; marking follows EN 12413 and ISO 525.
- Maximum speed: every wheel over 80 mm in diameter must be marked with its maximum operating speed. The machine speed must not exceed the speed marked on the wheel. Colour stripes: blue 50 m/s, yellow 60 m/s, red 80 m/s.
- Expiry date: organic-bonded (resin) wheels for hand-held machines have a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture (3M, citing FEPA). Expired wheels must be discarded even if they still look good.
- Restriction codes: RE1 – not permitted for hand-held grinding; RE2 – not permitted for hand-held cutting-off machines; RE3 – not permitted for wet grinding; RE6 – not permitted for side grinding.
- Cut-off wheels cut with the edge only: 3M requires that no side pressure be applied to cut-off wheels. Do not use a wheel that has been dropped or is suspected to be damaged. Always fit the correct guard and wear safety glasses or a face shield.
- Cut-off wheels for stainless steel: 3M’s stainless-steel wheel range limits Fe, S and Cl content to below 0.1 % to avoid contaminating the stainless steel surface.
Storage
- Store sandpaper and grinding wheels in a dry, cool place (3M’s recommendation for resin cut-off wheels). Paper backings stored in damp conditions tend to curl.
- Store wheels flat in their original box, with no heavy objects on top, and do not drop them.
- Record the date of receipt and use on a first-in, first-out basis so the 3-year shelf life is not exceeded.
Common mistakes
- Using the same wheels and flap discs on carbon steel and then on stainless steel — iron particles embed in the stainless steel and cause rust spots.
- Fitting a Φ125 wheel on a machine with an unsuitable speed, or removing the guard to “make work easier”.
- Using a thin cut-off wheel for side grinding of welds.
- Skipping too many grit grades (e.g. jumping straight from P120 to P1000) — the deep scratches of the coarse grade are not fully removed.
