FAQ
– Can text be printed on armbands? — Yes, from 50 pieces, 5 days.
– Are the aprons antistatic? — The PE/PVC versions are not; for ESD use a carbon fabric apron (special order).
PE/PVC aprons in ESD areas: insulators that must be controlled
PE and PVC aprons are insulating materials that charge strongly when rubbed against clothing or work surfaces. According to ESDA, grounding cannot remove charge from an insulator; the remedy is to remove unnecessary insulators from the EPA, or to use an ionizer to neutralise them when they cannot be removed.
In addition, an apron worn over an ESD smock covers the conductive fabric layer and brings a large insulating surface right up to the product. Therefore:
- Use PE/PVC aprons only in tray washing, machine cleaning, warehouse and kitchen areas — do not wear them at workstations handling exposed components.
- Where an apron is needed in an EPA, use a carbon fibre fabric apron (special order).
Choosing an apron by task
| Type | Advantages | Suitable tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Thin white PE, disposable | Cheap, light, discarded after use, no washing needed | Light washing, mixing dilute chemicals, food, visitors |
| Thick blue PVC | Good water and oil resistance, can be wiped clean and reused | Machine cleaning, tray washing, cold stores |
| Cotton/polyester cloth bib | Breathable, washable | Kitchens, warehouses, non-ESD packing areas |
| ESD carbon fabric apron | Reduces charging, matches ESD garments | EPA areas, rework benches |
Note: PE and PVC aprons only protect against splashes of water and ordinary oil. For concentrated corrosive chemicals, provide chemical protective equipment according to the safety data sheet (SDS) of the product in use.
Identification armbands
- Armbands printed “QC”, “Leader”, “Visitor” make it possible to recognise who is entering and their authority from a distance — a cheap and effective visual management tool.
- In EPA areas choose fabric armbands rather than PVC, for the same reason as with aprons: PVC is an insulator worn right on the arm, close to the product.
- Hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners can generate fibres when opened and closed many times — in cleanrooms keep the armbands clean and replace them when the fastener becomes fuzzy.
ESD chair covers
PU foam seat cushions are a significant source of static: according to ESDA, a chair with a urethane foam cushion can generate up to 18,000 V at low humidity. A carbon fabric cover reduces charging on the seat surface, but is only fully effective when the chair has a conductive path to the ESD floor (conductive castors or drag chain). A chair cover does not replace the seated operator’s wrist strap.
Cleaning, storage and common mistakes
- PVC aprons: wash with water and neutral soap and hang to dry; avoid strong solvents that harden and crack the plastic. Replace when cracked, broken or punctured.
- Thin PE aprons: single use, do not wash and reuse.
- Mistakes: wearing PVC aprons at soldering or assembly benches; wearing PVC armbands into EPA areas; fitting ESD chair covers on chairs with ordinary plastic castors on a non-ESD floor and then treating the chair as compliant.
