Floor marking tape that peels within a week in Vietnam factories is usually laid on concrete that still carries dust, moisture or oil, applied without roller pressure, or a thin 0.15 mm tape used in forklift aisles. PRIMEAG recommends cleaning, waiting until fully dry and rolling down the edges; use 3M 471 in hand-cart aisles and switch forklift aisles to floor marking paint.
Tape lines that lift in the first week are rarely caused by weak adhesive; the fault usually lies in the floor, the application method and the tape type.
- Check the floor: cement dust, moisture, oil.
- Application: clean, let dry, roll down; cut and butt-join at corners.
- Tape choice: 0.15 mm PVC or 3M 471 for hand carts; 764 for light-duty lines.
- Forklifts: prefer floor marking paint.

Why floor marking tape peels so fast: check the floor first
Polished concrete floors are usually coated with fine cement dust. The rubber adhesive bonds to that dust layer rather than to the concrete, so within a few days the tape edges lift.
A freshly washed floor is still damp; around machines there is an oil film. Test: apply a short strip, leave it overnight and peel it off; if the adhesive side is covered in gray dust, the floor is not clean.
The application instructions for both the PVC tape and 3M tapes state that they should not be applied to epoxy floors or painted floors that are not fully cured.
Application errors: no cleaning, no roller pressure, wrong temperature
Sweep, vacuum, wipe with IPA and wait until completely dry before applying. Floor cleaners containing wax leave a slick layer that destroys adhesion.
After laying the tape, roll it down from the center out to the edges; air bubbles left under the edge are the first point of failure.
Per the 3M TDS, 764 should be applied at 15–27 °C; TF-48 PVC tape has a temperature range of 0–60 °C. On floors near ovens or doors facing the afternoon sun, apply early in the morning.
Forklift turning points and small-wheel carts
Tape that peels in clusters usually coincides with forklift turning points, pallet-dragging spots or aisles used by carts with small, hard wheels. Wheels pivoting on the spot tear the tape edge; the exposed adhesive picks up dirt, so the line gradually turns black.
To reduce this: round off or chamfer the tape ends; at corners cut and butt-join instead of bending the tape; never let a joint sit in a wheel track.
Wrong tape type for each aisle
PVC floor marking tape TF-48: 0.15 mm backing, 48 mm × 33 m (also 24 / 72 mm). 3M 471 floor marking tape: 0.14 mm thick, tensile strength 270 N/100 mm, elongation 130 %. 3M 764 floor marking tape: 0.125 mm thick.
According to 3M, 764 is intended for light traffic, walls and pipes, and is not a long-term clean-removal tape; it should therefore not be used in cart aisles. TF-48 and 471 are both in the walkway and hand-cart class; under hand-cart traffic, PVC tape lasts 6–12 months. Forklift aisles need 0.5 mm thick tape or 3M 971 at 0.42 mm, both made to order.
When to switch to floor marking paint
Frequent forklift traffic, floors that are washed often or oily, a fixed layout: use floor marking paint in 1 L / 5 L, yellow or white, on a degreased and abraded surface. In areas where the layout changes often, such as rack bays or temporary pallet spots, tape is still more convenient.
Tape or paint by location
| Location | Recommended | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Walkways, fixed rack bays | 0.15 mm PVC tape or 3M 471 | PVC removes cleanly within 6 months; 471 removes cleanly in one piece |
| Temporary staging spots, walls, pipes | 3M 764 | Apply at 15–27 °C; not for vehicle aisles |
| Hand-cart aisles | 3M 471 or 0.15 mm PVC | Per OSHA, choose 72 mm width (PVC) or 76 mm (471) |
| Forklift turning, wet or oily floors | Floor marking paint or made-to-order heavy tape | Round off tape ends, keep joints out of wheel tracks |
Getting started: re-tape the failed sections
Peel off the lifted tape, remove old adhesive with IPA and let it dry. Apply a 1 m trial at the failure point, roll it down and monitor for a week; if it holds, do the whole line; if it still peels, switch that section to paint.
Stock items in the tape range are delivered within 24–48 hours to factories in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai and Binh Duong; quotes within 30 minutes. For line color conventions see lean workstation improvement, WIP control and 5S; for warehouse traffic lanes see warehouse logistics: wrong-location picks and slow picking.
Frequently asked questions
- Can floor marking tape be applied on freshly coated epoxy? — Not recommended; wait until the coating is fully cured per its TDS and test first.
- Does removing old floor tape leave adhesive residue? — 0.15 mm PVC tape removes cleanly if it has been down less than 6 months; after longer it may stain, clean with IPA.
- Should we use 48 mm or 72 mm floor marking tape? — 48 mm for rack bays; factories following OSHA use 72 mm for aisles (2–6 inches recommended).
