PVC Floor Marking Tape

Floor marking tape: thick PVC with rubber adhesive, for 5S marking of walkways, cart and rack positions, reject areas and hazard zones; peels off cleanly when the layout changes. For aisles with frequent forklift traffic, use floor line paint or epoxy paint.

Selection by process
– Walkways, storage positions → 48 mm floor tape (plants following US OSHA practice: 72 mm).
– Hazard zones, step edges, columns → yellow-black striped tape.
– Forklift aisles, pallet dragging → 0.5 mm thick floor tape (made to order) or floor line paint.

FAQ
– How long does floor tape last? — 6–12 months under hand carts; for forklifts use 0.5 mm thick floor tape (made to order).
– Does floor tape leave adhesive when removed? — It peels off cleanly within 6 months; after longer it may stain — clean with IPA.
– Can it be applied on ESD PVC flooring? — Standard PVC tape is an insulating material. In an EPA, avoid applying it where operators stand to handle components; ask PRIMEAG for a marking solution for ESD floors.

Floor marking tape: regulations and color conventions

  • OSHA 1910.176(a) (US) requires permanent aisles to be appropriately marked. OSHA’s interpretation letter allows any line color as long as it clearly defines the aisle; recommended line width is 2–6 inches, and 2 inches (about 50.8 mm) or more is acceptable. Plants following US practice should choose 72 mm instead of 48 mm for aisle lines.
  • OSHA 1910.144: red for fire protection equipment; yellow for caution and physical hazards.

There is no common mandatory standard for floor marking colors. A common convention (per Brady’s guidance) for applying 5S:

Red – white stripes Areas to keep clear: in front of electrical panels, fire equipment

Floor tape durability and installation

For reference, 3M’s vinyl floor tape range: the 0.14 mm total-thickness type (471) is for medium-traffic floors and removes cleanly over long periods; only the 0.42 mm type (971) is intended for forklifts and pallet dragging. The 0.15 mm floor tape supplied by PRIMEAG belongs to the first group — suitable for foot traffic and hand carts.

  • The floor must be free of dust, dry and oil-free; clean and wait until fully dry before applying.
  • Use a squeegee or roller to remove air bubbles and increase adhesive contact.
  • Corners: cut and butt-join instead of bending the tape — bent edges lift easily.
  • Do not apply on epoxy or painted floors that are not fully cured.
