Kapton high-temperature tape

Code: TK-1033 · Specification: Kapton polyimide high-temperature tape, 260 °C. Delivery: in stock, delivered within 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); lead time for bulk orders is confirmed with the quotation.

Also known as: “Kapton tape”, “yellow heat-resistant tape”, “polyimide tape” — the difference: true 25 µm polyimide backing (not dyed PET), silicone adhesive that does not flow through reflow, supplied with a temperature and breakdown voltage sheet.
Common specification: 5 / 10 / 20 mm.

Masking tape for pads, gold fingers and connectors through reflow or wave soldering; coil insulation and holding wires inside hot equipment. The polyimide backing withstands 260 °C continuously, and the silicone adhesive peels off cleanly with no residue once cooled. Clear amber colour makes the masking edge easy to see.

Choose by process step
– Masking pads/connectors through reflow, wave → Kapton (this code).
– Paint or spray-coating masking at room temperature → 3M 244 (TM-244).
– EPA, tape must not hold charge → black ESD Kapton or low-static polyimide (ask PRIMEAG before ordering).
– Heat-sealer insulation, 260 °C continuous with friction → PTFE (Teflon) tape (TT-60).

Documents per batch: temperature/voltage datasheet, RoHS; sample of 1 roll.
Recurring orders: price held for 6 months, minimum stock of 2 cartons of 10 mm.
Storage: cool, dry place in the original packaging; shelf life and storage conditions per the supplier datasheet for each batch.

Polyimide (Kapton) – the backing material

Kapton is the trade name of the polyimide film developed by DuPont. According to the DuPont Kapton HN datasheet:

Property Value (25 µm film) Meaning for reflow masking tape
Service temperature range −269 to 400 °C The backing film easily withstands peak reflow temperatures
Glass transition temperature 360–410 °C Does not soften at soldering temperatures
Melting point None Does not melt or shrink like PET
Dielectric strength 303 kV/mm (7,700 V/mil) Usable as an insulating tape
Shrinkage 0.17 % after 30 minutes at 150 °C Masking edge stays in place
Folding endurance (MIT) 285,000 cycles Can be applied over edges and folded without cracking

The real limit is the adhesive

The polyimide film withstands up to 400 °C, but the 260 °C figure on the tape is the limit of the silicone adhesive. For example, 3M defines the −73 to 260 °C range of its 5413 tape as the maximum temperature after which the tape still removes cleanly from copper without staining. Beyond that temperature or time, the adhesive gets “baked” and tends to leave residue. Reference data for 3M 5413:

  • Polyimide backing 0.03 mm, silicone adhesive, total thickness 0.07 mm, amber colour.
  • Adhesion to steel 24 N/100 mm (ASTM D3330); dielectric strength 7,000 V (ASTM D149).
  • Meets UL 510 for flame retardance; meets ASTM D5213 Type 1, Class A (replacing MIL-P-46112B).
  • Store at 21 °C, 50 % RH in the original packaging; shelf life 36 months from the manufacturing date.

Static when peeling tape

Polyimide is a very good insulator (volume resistivity of about 10¹⁷ Ω·cm per DuPont). The consequence: unwinding the roll and peeling tape off a board generates charge — a risk to static-sensitive components on the board. 3M has a dedicated 5419 “low static” line stated to have very low electrostatic discharge on unwinding and peeling. In the EPA:

  • Boards with sensitive components (ICs, MOSFETs, sensors) → use ESD Kapton (black) or low-static polyimide tape.
  • Peel slowly at a low angle, at a bench with an ionizer if the factory has one.
  • Do not leave rolls of ordinary Kapton tape right next to bare components on the bench.

Masking technique for pads and gold fingers

  1. Surface free of flux and skin oil, dry; board at room temperature.
  2. Apply the tape and press the edges down firmly with a plastic stick or ESD burnishing tool — open edges are where solder paste, molten solder and coatings get in.
  3. Do not let the tape edge overlap pads that need soldering; on gold fingers, keep the tape edge an even distance from the pad edge line.
  4. Masking through several cycles (reflow on 2 sides, then wave): choose a thicker version and check the adhesive after each cycle.

If the next step is conformal coating or bonding, test adhesion on the area where the tape was removed — 3M notes that heat-resistant silicone adhesive reduces adhesive transfer, but it should still be verified on the actual process.

Common mistakes

  • Buying cheap “Kapton” tape that is yellow-dyed PET; through reflow it shrinks, flows and leaves adhesive on the pads.
  • Using Kapton on the sealing bars of bag sealers with continuous friction — use fabric-backed PTFE (Teflon) tape (TT-60) instead.
  • Ignoring shelf life: tape kept for long periods in a hot store can lose adhesion and become harder to remove cleanly.
  • Peeling tape quickly and jerkily on boards with static-sensitive components.

FAQ

  • How to tell real Kapton from yellow-dyed PET? — Hold it to a flame: polyimide does not shrink, PET shrinks and melts. PRIMEAG sends the supplier’s temperature sheet.
  • How long at 260 °C? — Continuously through reflow (5–10 minutes); 300 °C for no more than 30 minutes.
  • Does it leave residue when removed after reflow? — No, if removed while still warm or within 24 h; left for many weeks it may stain slightly.
  • What is the 5 mm width for? — Masking small pads and gold fingers.
