Code: TK-PET · Specification: blue PET high-temperature tape, 200 °C. Delivery: in stock, delivered within 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); lead time for bulk orders is confirmed with the quotation.
Common specification: 20 mm and 50 mm, 0.06.
Blue PET backing + silicone adhesive: withstands 180–200 °C (30 minutes), removes cleanly — for powder coating (180 °C cure), plating masking, adhesive curing, and masking PCBs through ovens below 200 °C. Not a substitute for Kapton in 260 °C reflow. The thicker 0.08 mm version is for sharp edges. Brown PET tape rated 200 °C for temporary masking.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Backing / adhesive | Blue PET 25 µm / silicone; total 0.06 or 0.08 mm |
| Width × length | 10 / 20 / 25 / 50 / 100 mm × 33 m (50 m for 0.06) |
| Temperature | 180 °C continuous, 200 °C / 30 minutes |
| Adhesion | ≥ 2 N/25 mm |
| Packing | 20 mm: 60 rolls/carton |
| MOQ | 10 rolls |
Selection: ≤200 °C → blue PET (lower cost); 260 °C reflow/wave → Kapton (TK-1033); standard paint masking → 3M 2308.
Why does PET film withstand 200 °C but not reflow?
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) has a glass transition temperature of about 67–81 °C, melts at about 260 °C and decomposes above 300 °C. The PET film used for tape is biaxially oriented and crystalline, so it holds its shape at paint-curing temperatures for short periods. But the 260 °C that reflow masking tape must withstand (the design rating of Kapton TK-1033) reaches the melting point of PET — which is why blue PET cannot replace Kapton in soldering processes.
The silicone adhesive is the second deciding component: 3M states that silicone adhesives withstand heat far better than many rubber and acrylic adhesives, with less softening, less oozing and less adhesive transfer to the part when hot.
Reference data from manufacturers
| Product | Construction | Stated temperature |
|---|---|---|
| 3M 8992 (dark green) | PET 0.052 mm + silicone, total 0.082 mm | up to 204 °C |
| tesa 50650 | PET 55 µm, silicone adhesive 30 µm | 220 °C |
| tesa 50600 | PET 80 µm, silicone adhesive 30 µm | 220 °C |
3M 8992 also states adhesion to steel of 48 N/100 mm, tensile strength of 998 N/100 mm and elongation at break of 148 %. Manufacturers rate powder-coating masking tapes for oven dwell times of up to about 30 minutes at typical cure temperatures of around 200 °C — consistent with PRIMEAG’s “200 °C / 30 minutes” rating.
Comparison with paper tape and Kapton
| Tape type | Example | Stated temperature | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crepe paper, rubber adhesive | 3M 2308 | 121 °C for 30 minutes | Water-based paint, light baking |
| Flat paper, acrylic adhesive | 3M 244 | 100 °C for 30 minutes | Fine paint masking, sharp lines |
| PET + silicone | Blue PET TK-PET | 180–200 °C | Powder coating, adhesive curing, plating masking |
| Polyimide + silicone | Kapton TK-1033 | 260 °C | Reflow, wave soldering |
tesa notes that paper tapes may withstand the heat but lack the tensile and tear strength needed for removal after the paint oven; PET film keeps its strength and gives sharp paint edges.
Masking for powder coating correctly
- Clean oil, dust and water from the application area (after degreasing – phosphating, the part must be completely dry).
- Apply the tape flat, without stretching: stretched film shrinks back in the oven, the tape edge retracts and paint creeps into the masked area.
- Press the edges down firmly; for threaded holes, use silicone plugs or pre-cut pieces instead of winding many layers of tape.
- Remove after the part leaves the oven and has cooled enough to handle, peeling at a low angle; according to tesa, dedicated PET tapes come off in one piece and leave no adhesive, even when the edge is covered by cured coating.
Besides powder coating, 3M also lists uses as a “flashbreaker” tape (pulled through cured epoxy coatings to form an edge), bag sealing, and holding parts in place during heating.
Storage
- Per 3M (8992): store at 16–27 °C and 40–60 % humidity in the original packaging; use within 24 months of the manufacturing date for best performance.
- Store opened rolls in a sealed bag so the roll edges do not pick up dust — dust on the edge causes gaps in the masking line.
Common mistakes
- Using blue PET to mask pads through 260 °C reflow.
- Leaving the tape on the part for days after baking before removing it — the adhesive becomes harder to remove cleanly.
- Using ordinary paper tape in 180–200 °C paint ovens — the paper becomes brittle and tears into pieces on removal.
- Choosing too wide a tape for curved edges — use a narrow width or pre-cut pieces (die-cut) instead.
FAQ
- What is the difference between blue PET and Kapton? — PET backing withstands 200 °C, Kapton 260–300 °C; PET costs less.
- Does it leave residue after baking? — No, if removed within 24 hours.
