Splice tape is the fastest way to join component reels at the material preparation station: stick the two carrier tape ends together with the holes aligned at 4 mm pitch and the feeder keeps running with no machine stop. PRIMEAG supplies pre-cut splice strips with sprocket holes (easy to place on pitch), cover-tape extender (to join the cover film) and yellow label tape for writing lot codes on reels. Use together with copper splice clips when running small chips at high speed.
What splice tape does on an SMT line
When a component reel is about to run out, the operator joins the tail of the old reel to the head of the new reel right on the feeder: the splice tape is pressed over the two carrier tape ends, and its holes line up with the sprocket holes of the carrier tape so the feeder keeps indexing at exactly 4 mm. A 10-machine line makes 300–600 splices per shift; stopping a machine to change a feeder costs 1–2 minutes each time, so poor splice tape (off pitch, adhesive lifting, tearing) wastes many machine-hours every month.

Which processes it suits
- Material preparation stations pre-splicing reels before they go to the machine.

How to apply correctly
- Cut both carrier tape ends square midway between two holes and butt them together in the guide channel.
- Place the splice tape so its holes coincide with the carrier tape holes, then press down evenly from the centre outwards.
- Smooth black plastic carrier tape: add a strip underneath as well, or clamp a copper clip.
- Join the cover tape with cover-tape extender; pull-test by hand before refitting the feeder.
Compared with copper splice clips
Splice tape is quick, needs no pliers, and suits paper tape at moderate speed. Copper clips hold mechanically, never slip pitch, and suit 0402/0201 chips at high speed and black plastic tape. Most shops use both: the clip holds, the tape covers the joint. See SMT copper splice clips.
