The splice clip is the smallest part on the line, yet it decides whether an SMT line stops every time a reel runs out: it clamps the two ends of the component carrier tape, its teeth lock into the 4 mm sprocket holes, and the pick-and-place machine keeps running without reloading the feeder. Why splice with copper clips instead of tape alone
Splice tape holds the two tape ends with adhesive; a copper clip holds them mechanically: two rows of teeth pierce the sprocket holes of the carrier tape and are crimped flat with pliers, so the joint does not slip when the feeder pulls the tape at high speed or when the carrier tape is smooth black plastic. Several machine makers (Panasonic, Fuji, Yamaha, Samsung) recommend clips on 8 mm feeders running 0402/0201 chips, because an adhesive-only splice can drift off pitch and cause mispicks. Most shops use both: the clip holds, and splice tape over the top covers the joint.
Two pack formats
- Loose single clips (SMT-CLIP-L): individual clips, 4,000 pcs/bag, from 250,000 VND/bag. Used with hand splice pliers; suits shops with few feeders or manual splicing at the material preparation station.
- 20-line strips (SMT-CLIP-T): 20 clips joined in one strip, snapped off one at a time when splicing; inner box of 25 strips (500 clips), carton of 8 inner boxes = 200 strips = 4,000 clips, from 450,000 VND/carton. Used with a strip splice tool or ordinary pliers; no clips spilled on the bench and stock-taking by strip is easier.

How to splice correctly
- Cut both carrier tape ends square and peel the cover tape back 2–3 pockets.
- Place both tape ends in the guide channel of the pliers/tool so the sprocket holes run on at a continuous 4 mm pitch with no missing hole.
- Lay the clip on, squeeze the pliers once firmly so the teeth pass fully through the holes and fold under.
- Apply SMT splice tape over the joint (top, and bottom too for smooth carrier tape); rejoin the cover tape with cover-tape extender.
- Pull-test by hand: no movement means pass; a joint that is off pitch must be cut out and redone.
