Two glove types: one-piece moulded rubber gloves (Trong Hung, Vicadi 10–24 kV; imported 25–35 kV) with a label printed with the test voltage, test leakage current and manufacturing date, supplied with a test report; and 1,000 V knitted gloves with a rough rubber coating (imported), with an anti-slip palm and the voltage rating printed on the back of the hand — compact and dexterous, for low-voltage electricians, panel assembly and machine maintenance.
Choosing gloves by voltage class
Rubber insulating gloves are classified internationally under IEC 60903 and ASTM D120 (USA, OSHA 1910.137). Each class specifies a test voltage and a maximum use voltage:
| Class | Maximum use voltage (AC) | Test voltage (AC) |
|---|---|---|
| 00 | 500 V | 2,500 V |
| 0 | 1,000 V | 5,000 V |
| 1 | 7,500 V | 10,000 V |
| 2 | 17,000 V | 20,000 V |
| 3 | 26,500 V | 30,000 V |
| 4 | 36,000 V | 40,000 V |
Rule: the maximum use voltage of the glove class must be greater than or equal to the phase-to-phase voltage of the equipment. 380/400 V low-voltage panels use Class 0 gloves (low voltage, 5 kV test). RMUs and 22 kV substations use gloves marked 22 kV or higher — check against the lot test report. For medium-voltage work always wear leather protector gloves over them so the rubber gloves are not cut or punctured.
Pre-shift checks and periodic testing
- Air test for punctures before every use: roll the cuff, squeeze to inflate the glove, and listen and look for leaks. Holes, tears, ozone cracking, blisters or tackiness → discard.
- Periodic electrical testing: OSHA requires rubber gloves to be retested at least every 6 months; gloves stored unused for more than 12 months must be tested before issue. Write the latest test date on the glove label.
- Keep the lot test reports together with the issue log to present during electrical safety inspections or customer audits.
Storage
- Keep in a separate bag/box, away from sunlight, high temperatures, ozone (near motors, welding machines, discharging high-voltage equipment), oil, grease and solvents.
- Do not fold gloves or place heavy objects on them; hang them or lay them flat, fingers pointing down.
- Wash with water and mild soap and let dry naturally; do not use a dryer.
Products to use with them
Gloves only protect the hands. Switchgear operating positions also need an insulating rubber mat on the floor, insulating boots and, for medium and high voltage, an insulating hot stick and a portable earthing set. How to choose a complete set by voltage class: see the guide electrical safety equipment for electrical rooms and MSB (main switchboard) panels.
FAQ
– Can low-voltage insulating gloves be used on a 22 kV switchgear? — No. Low-voltage gloves are only for networks below 1 kV. Work on 22 kV medium-voltage switchgear requires gloves rated 22 kV or higher, with leather protector gloves worn over them.
– How often must gloves be retested? — Per OSHA 1910.137: rubber insulating gloves are electrically retested at least every 6 months, and before reuse if they have been in storage for more than 12 months. Air-test them for punctures before every shift.
– Do the gloves come with a test report? — PRIMEAG supplies the manufacturer’s test report per lot. Independent testing at an electrical testing laboratory is arranged on request, with the cost quoted separately.
– What sizes are available? — Vietnamese gloves (Trong Hung, Vicadi) come in a standard one-size fit; imported gloves come in sizes 9–10. State the voltage class and quantity when requesting a quote.
