ESD Steel-toe Cleanroom Shoes & Boots
Common specifications: steel-toe boots in white and navy, sizes 38–44; white steel-toe shoes, sizes 40–43.
Delivery: in stock, delivered within 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); lead time for bulk orders is confirmed with the quotation.
For areas that require ESD protection and also carry a risk of falling objects: heavy component stores, mould stores, mechanical work inside cleanrooms. White steel-toe shoes: shoe style, 200 J steel toecap, conductive PU sole. Steel-toe boots: high leg, carbon-fibre fabric shaft, steel toecap, 6 colours to match the garment set. Both have a declared ESD resistance of 10⁵–10⁸ Ω and a protective toecap to EN ISO 20345 class SB; the ESD property is declared separately because class SB does not include the antistatic marking (A).
| Type | Toecap | Sole | Size | Colour | Packing |

FAQ
– Does the steel toecap compromise ESD performance? — No; the conductive path runs through the sole, and the steel toecap sits inside the upper.
– How heavy are they? — ~450 g per shoe, 150 g heavier than an ordinary shoe.
What does a 200 J steel toecap mean?
Under EN ISO 20345 (safety footwear), the protective toecap must withstand an impact of 200 J and a compression of 15,000 N (15 kN). To put it in perspective: 200 J is roughly equivalent to an object of about 20 kg falling from a height of about 1 m onto the toe of the shoe. After the test, the clearance remaining under the toecap must be sufficient not to crush the toes.
The steel toecap sits inside the upper and is not part of the conductive path from the foot to the floor, so it does not change the ESD properties — the charge still flows through the insole and the conductive PU sole.
Reading the markings on safety footwear
| Marking | Meaning (EN ISO 20345) |
|---|---|
| SB | Basic requirements, with 200 J protective toecap |
| S1 | SB + antistatic (A) + energy-absorbing heel (E) + closed heel |
| S2 | S1 + water-resistant upper (WPA) |
| S3 | S2 + penetration-resistant sole + cleated outsole |
| A | Antistatic: 10⁵ – 10⁹ Ω |
| E | Heel absorbs impact energy |
Note: the antistatic (A) range of EN ISO 20345 is wider than the ESD range used for electronics (10⁵–10⁸ Ω to EN 61340-5-1). Safety footwear marked only “A” does not necessarily meet EPA requirements. This product declares both: steel toecap and ESD resistance of 10⁵–10⁸ Ω.
When are steel-toe shoes/boots needed in an electronics factory?
- Component stores and mould stores: handling cartons, reels and heavy moulds.
- Maintenance areas for SMT machines, presses and cutting machines inside the EPA: removing and fitting feeders, nozzles and machine heads.
- Areas with heavy traffic of trolleys and hand pallet trucks — risk of wheels running over toes.
- Cleanrooms with mechanical processes: choose high-leg steel-toe boots to keep dust out and protect the feet at the same time.
Conductive PU soles – advantages and limitations
- PU is light, resilient, and has good resistance to abrasion, oil and grease. According to one safety boot manufacturer (Dunlop), PU boots are more than 40 % lighter than PVC boots and last longer — offsetting the weight of the steel toecap.
- For concentrated acids and alkalis, PVC with suitable additives is a better choice than PU (same source).
- PU undergoes hydrolysis in prolonged hot, humid conditions; store footwear in a dry, well-ventilated place (Kuraray).
When must footwear be replaced?
- After a heavy impact on the toe, even if the foot was not injured. The US National Safety Council (NSC) recommends replacing footwear with damage in the toe area immediately; a dented steel toecap does not spring back and must be replaced (EHS Today).
- The fabric/leather covering is torn, exposing the steel toecap — the toecap may shift and no longer protect correctly (Delta Plus).
- The outsole is worn flat, or the sole is separating from the upper.
- ESD test fails after the sole has been cleaned.
There is no common replacement interval for every factory: service life depends on the work, how often the footwear is worn and the wearer’s weight. Record the issue date and track by area.
ESD testing and common mistakes
- Test each foot with a footwear tester before every shift. The person – footwear – floor system must be < 1×10⁹ Ω according to ANSI/ESD S20.20.
- Wear the footwear on both feet and walk on an ESD floor — steel-toe shoes on an ordinary floor have no ESD effect.
- Do not use ordinary “antistatic” safety footwear in place of ESD footwear without a measurement record.
- Do not stick in or add ordinary insoles — this can easily break the conductive path.
