Linkworld ESD Shoes, PU sole
Common specifications: 4-hole, sizes 36–43.
Delivery: in stock, delivered within 24–48 hours (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai); lead time for bulk orders is confirmed with the quotation.
Linkworld is an ESD shoe line used by many electronics factories: soft two-layer PU sole, thick canvas upper, snug fit, and generally more durable than PVC shoes. Four upper styles: 4-hole standard, mesh breathable, closed (strap) and closed upper sealed for ISO 7–8 cleanrooms; ISO 5–6 should use cleanroom boots.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Sole | 2-layer conductive PU, anti-slip |
| Upper | Thick canvas, white |
| Resistance | 10⁵ – 10⁸ Ω |
| Style | 4-hole (GLW_4L) / mesh (GLW_ML) / closed with strap (GLW_MLD) / closed upper (GLW_MLN) |
| Size | 35 – 46 |
| Packing | 1 pair/box · 10 pairs/carton |
| MOQ | 5 pairs |
Selection: low budget → PVC (SH-PVC); ISO 7–8 needing closed shoes → closed with strap; ISO 5–6 → cleanroom boots; men’s size >46 → PVC 47–48.

Construction and charge path of ESD shoes
Antistatic shoes do not “absorb” static. They create a controlled conductive path from the body to the floor: skin → sock → insole → conductive sole → ESD floor → ground. Every layer in this chain affects the final resistance.
- Two-layer PU sole: light, elastic cellular polyurethane with conductive additives. PU is lighter and softer than vulcanised rubber soles, with good abrasion resistance (according to Kuraray, a sole material manufacturer).
- Thick canvas upper: holds its shape, breathable, easy to wipe; not the main conductive part.
- Insole and internal path: replacing the insole or adding an ordinary insert can break the conductive path. uvex notes that any change to the insole or sole can skew the measurement results.
How do “ESD” shoes differ from “antistatic” shoes?
The two terms are often used interchangeably on the market, but their resistance ranges differ:
| Type | Resistance range | Standard | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antistatic (marked A) | 10⁵ – 10⁹ Ω | EN ISO 20345 | Personal safety, general reduction of charging |
| ESD | 10⁵ – 10⁸ Ω | EN 61340-5-1 (measured per EN 61340-4-3) | Protecting static-sensitive electronic components |
According to uvex, ESD shoes always meet antistatic requirements, but antistatic shoes do not necessarily meet ESD requirements. Safety Jogger states that ESD shoes discharge about 10 times faster than antistatic shoes. The 10⁵–10⁸ Ω range of this item falls within the ESD range.
Shoes only work with an ESD floor
- ANSI/ESD S20.20 evaluates the person – footwear – floor system: resistance to ground < 1×10⁹ Ω and body voltage while walking < 100 V; or < 3.5×10⁷ Ω, in which case no voltage test is needed. Wearing ESD shoes on tiled or ordinary epoxy floors leaves the charge without a path to ground.
- According to the ESD TR20.20 handbook (cited by Desco), ESD footwear must be worn on both feet: when walking, one foot is always lifted off the floor at some point.
- ESDA requires seated operators handling exposed components to wear a grounded wrist strap. When seated, the feet often leave the floor or rest on the chair — shoes cannot replace the wrist strap.
Testing before each entry to the EPA
- Use a footwear tester at the EPA entrance. The ESD SP9.2 guidance recommends testing before each use (every day, every shift change).
- Test each foot separately: place one foot on the electrode, with the other foot lifted off both the electrode and the ESD floor (Desco).
- Doubtful result: lift both feet, wait a few seconds and test again.
- Record the results in a log — S20.20 auditors will ask for it.
Factors that increase resistance: cold shoes (left overnight in a car or cold room), dirty soles, and dry feet just put into the shoes. Conversely, moisture inside the shoe after a period of wear usually improves discharge (uvex).
Storage and service life
- PU undergoes hydrolysis over time: moisture breaks the polymer chains, and the sole becomes brittle and less elastic; heat and humidity speed up this process (Kuraray). Shoe storage should be dry, ventilated and out of the sun — this is important in the Ho Chi Minh City climate.
- Wipe the soles with a damp cloth or IPA. Do not machine-wash the shoes; do not heat-dry.
- Wear the shoes only inside the EPA. Walking outside coats the soles with an insulating layer of dirt; if you have been outside, re-test before entering (per Desco/Semtronics tester documentation).
- Replace the shoes when they fail the test even after cleaning, when the sole tread is worn smooth, or when the sole separates from the upper.
Common mistakes
- Buying cheap “antistatic” shoes for the EPA without a test report per EN 61340-4-3.
- Adding an ordinary foam insole for comfort.
- Issuing ESD shoes when the floor is not an ESD floor, or without a tester at the entrance.
- Treating shoes as sufficient for seated soldering and assembly operators and dropping the wrist strap.
