FAQ
– What do S1P and S3 mean? — S1: protective toecap, closed heel, basic antistatic properties, shock absorption; P: penetration-resistant midsole; S3 = S1P + water resistance and cleated sole.
– Are Jogger shoes ESD? — Models marked “ESD” (AAK, Aura) meet antistatic requirements under the safety footwear standard; in an EPA to ANSI/ESD S20.20 you should still use dedicated ESD footwear and measure the person–footwear–floor system.
– Can insulating shoes be used in an EPA? — No. Insulating footwear (Voltan, Elan, insulating boots) serves the opposite purpose to antistatic footwear.

Safety footwear standards: EN ISO 20345 and TCVN 7652

Safety footwear to EN ISO 20345 must have a protective toecap tested to 200 J impact and 15 kN compression. Footwear with other features but no protective toecap is occupational footwear (marked O) to EN ISO 20347. In Vietnam, TCVN 7652:2007 is equivalent to ISO 20345:2004 (200 J toecap, 15 kN compression, penetration-resistant sole of at least 1,100 N), with test methods to TCVN 7651:2007 (ISO 20344).

Circular 25/2022/TT-BLDTBXH (effective 01/04/2023) regulates the provision of personal protective equipment: the equipment must protect against the hazards actually identified, be easy to use, and comply with technical standards and regulations. Footwear is chosen according to the risks of the workstation, not according to price.

Reading the markings (2022 edition)

Penetration-resistant midsole: P = steel plate, tested with a 4.5 mm nail; PL = non-metallic, 4.5 mm nail; PS = non-metallic, 3 mm nail (smaller nail, higher pressure, more demanding requirement).
Slip resistance: the 2022 edition makes the test on ceramic tile with soap solution (SLS) mandatory, so it no longer has its own marking; SR is an additional test on ceramic tile with glycerine (oily surface). The markings SRA, SRB and SRC belong to the 2011 edition.
Certificates are valid for 5 years from the date of issue, so shoes with old-style markings (S3 SRC) and new-style markings (S1PS, S3S) are on the market at the same time — both are valid.
Common additional markings: HRO (sole resistant to 300 °C contact heat), FO (sole resistant to fuel oil), CI/HI (cold/heat insulation of the sole), M (metatarsal protection), AN (ankle protection).

Electrical properties: antistatic, ESD and insulating are three different things

All ESD footwear is antistatic, but S1 footwear usually only guarantees 10⁵–10⁹ Ω — it does not necessarily meet ESD requirements. An EPA accepts only footwear bearing the ESD mark, and the person – footwear – floor system must be measured.
Under EN 50321-1, insulating footwear for live working must be moulded polymer boots/shoes or overboots; stitched leather footwear is excluded because damp leather conducts electricity. In Europe this is Category III personal protective equipment.
For shoes marked “6 kV insulating”, check which standard the certificate refers to, the test voltage and the test conditions. The US standard ASTM F2413 (EH marking) tests the dielectric strength of the sole and does not replace EN 50321-1. Insulating footwear is always an additional layer of protection, used together with insulating gloves, insulating mats and lock-out procedures.

Storage, service life and common mistakes

PU soles undergo hydrolysis when stored for long periods in hot, humid conditions; keep stock in a cool, dry place and rotate it. Shoes worn regularly actually last longer than shoes kept in storage for a long time.
Replace shoes when the toecap has taken a heavy impact, the sole is worn smooth, the sole is detaching, the upper is torn exposing the steel toecap, or the anti-puncture midsole has been pierced.
Insulating footwear: inspect before every use; discard if the sole has been pierced by a nail or sharp object or is cracked. Do not use when soaking wet.
Replacing the insole with an ordinary insole voids the certified antistatic/ESD properties.
Wearing insulating shoes into an EPA, or ESD shoes for electrical work — the two purposes are opposite.
