Construction and selection

  • Cable: flexible stranded copper with a transparent sheath so broken strands are visible; 3 branch leads clamp the 3 phases and join into 1 main lead to earth. Select the cross-section by the maximum short-circuit current and clearing time (see IEC 61230).
  • Clamps: aluminium alloy or copper, 5.3 cm opening to suit common busbars and conductors; flat-bar clamps are available for low-voltage panels.
  • Insulating sticks: the number of sections and height increase with voltage class (62 cm for low voltage, 1.6 m for 35 kV, 2.1 m for 110 kV, 4.05 m for 220 kV).
  • 80 cm earth rod: driven into the ground or clamped to the substation’s earth electrode/earthing grid.

Safety sequence

  1. De-energize, lock out and hang a “Do not switch on” tag.
  2. Verify the absence of voltage with a voltage detector of the correct voltage class.
  3. Clamp the earth end to the earthing system first.
  4. Use the insulating stick to clamp the 3 phases one by one, wearing insulating gloves and insulating boots.
  5. When finished: remove the 3 phases first and the earth end last, and check that the set is complete before re-energizing.

Inspection and storage

  • Before each use: no broken cable strands, no cracked clamps, bolts tight, sticks free of cracks and moisture.
  • Store in a cloth bag in a dry place, away from oil and grease; number each set and keep a handover log so none is left in place when re-energizing.

Companion equipment for substations and electrical rooms: insulating hot stick, insulating rubber mat, insulating stool. Guide to choosing a complete set: electrical safety equipment for electrical rooms and MSB (main switchboard) panels.

FAQ
– When is a portable earthing set used? — After de-energizing and verifying the absence of voltage, before working on the equipment: earth and short-circuit all 3 phases to protect workers if the power is re-energized or an induced voltage appears.
– What is the order for attaching and removing? — Attaching: clamp the earth end to the earthing system first, then clamp the 3 phases one by one with the insulating stick. Removing: the reverse — remove the 3 phases first and the earth end last.
– What cable cross-section is sufficient? — The low-voltage to 110 kV sets in the table use 16 mm² copper cable, the 220 kV set uses 35 mm². Higher short-circuit currents require a larger cross-section as calculated by the power utility.
– Can sets be made to order? — Yes: cable length, cross-section, clamp type and number of sticks are made to order. Send the specifications or a drawing and PRIMEAG will quote.
