SMT Reel Storage in Vietnam Factories: Find Reels Fast, Stop Mix-ups

How do you stop slow reel searches in SMT reel storage at a Vietnam factory? Give every rack slot a level–slot code, store reels upright in ESD bins (10³–10⁹ Ω) sorted by size, and count partial reels and record the remaining quantity before putting them away in a separate zone. PRIMEAG builds Φ28 plastic-coated steel pipe racks; standard models in 5–7 working days.

Reel storage next to an SMT line is usually tidy at first, then gets messier after a few model changeovers. A machine operator urgently needs one part number but has to dig through several levels, sometimes for 5–10 minutes. Partial reels come back without the remaining quantity recorded and end up mixed with full reels; moisture-sensitive reels sit unbagged across shifts. The root cause is a rack with no addresses and no put-away rules.

Summary
  • An address for every slot: level–slot codes printed on labels and linked to the part number in the stock list.
  • Reels upright, sorted by size: ESD bins and trays instead of flat stacks.
  • Three separate zones: full reels, partial reels, reels waiting to return to the warehouse.
  • Controlled put-away: count and scan; MSL reels go back into moisture barrier bags.

1. Addressing your SMT reel storage

Each rack slot gets a fixed code, for example row – level – slot, labeled on the edge of the level. The stock list records each part number with its location code, so the picker walks straight to the slot instead of searching level by level. Labels are printed on a TSC/Zebra printer and can be changed when the layout is rearranged.

2. Reels upright in ESD bins and trays sorted by size

Stand reels upright like books in anti-static plastic bins or anti-static plastic trays, one reel size per bin, reel labels facing out. The material is carbon-filled PP with a surface resistance of 10³–10⁹ Ω; the 610×420 bin series comes in heights of 100–390 mm, chosen to suit the reel diameters in your store.

3. Separate three zones: full – partial – awaiting return

Full reels stay in the main zone. Partial reels have their own zone near the line, also addressed. Reels waiting to go back to the warehouse sit on a separate level and do not enter the main zone until they are counted. Use a different label color for each of the three zones.

4. Count and scan when reels are returned

A partial reel may only be put away once its remaining quantity is recorded. With a reel counter and Zebra DS2208 barcode scanner, the storekeeper counts the components on the tape, prints a quantity label, then scans the reel code and the slot code when placing it. The next issue does not need a recount at the machine.

5. Moisture-sensitive reels go straight back into bags

Reels of MSL 2 and above are never left unbagged on the rack. When they are returned, record the time opened, put them back into a moisture barrier bag with a fresh desiccant pack and HIC card, then heat-seal; reels that have exceeded their floor life must be baked before use. How to track floor life is covered in moisture control in an MSL component store.

6. Choosing racks for reel storage

Φ28 plastic-coated steel pipe racks with bolted joints fit every corner of the store, built from Φ28 lean pipe and joints, with ESD pipe available for EPA areas. For many heavy bins, use a medium-duty rack with ESD surface, 200–500 kg/level. ESD-surface racks must be grounded, with resistance to ground < 1×10⁹ Ω.

If your factory is an export processing enterprise (EPE), every order worth VND 20 million or more receives a 0% VAT invoice, and PRIMEAG handles the on-the-spot import/export customs declaration free of charge.

Reel store self-check

  • Every slot has a location code in the stock list.
  • No reel sits outside a bin or tray.
  • Every partial reel has a remaining-quantity label.
  • Every MSL reel is in a sealed bag with an HIC.
  • ESD-surface racks, bins and trays in the reel store also need periodic resistance measurement; PRIMEAG can come to your plant for free ESD resistance measurement and send a PDF report of readings by location.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does a small SMT reel store need location codes? — Yes. Even a few racks should have codes, so the next shift can find the right reel from the list without asking.
  • Should partial SMT reels be stored with full reels? — Not recommended. A separate zone with remaining-quantity labels helps use up partial reels before opening new ones.
  • What resistance do ESD bins for SMT reels need? — PRIMEAG’s carbon-filled PP bins and trays achieve 10³–10⁹ Ω; for holding loose components directly, specify the 10⁶–10⁹ Ω range when ordering.
