General: genuine 3M products (made in Vietnam/Thailand/China depending on the code), CO/CQ, anti-counterfeit labels, RoHS; 76 mm core; MOQ 1 box per code; carton pricing. Temperatures in the table are for reference; per 3M TDS: 471 is used in the 4–77 °C range, 764 is applied at 16–27 °C, 9448A about 70 °C long term / 150 °C short term — see the TDS table below and the datasheet for each code.

Selection by process step
– Painting/conformal coating, pad masking → 2308 (cheap) or 244 (finer).
– Double-sided bonding of small panels, labels, gaskets → 9448 (thin) or VHB (load-bearing, outdoor).
– Floor marking with forklift traffic → 3M 971 (special order); walkways, hand trolleys → 471; light or temporary lines → 764; warnings → yellow-black striped tape.
– Tape through 260 °C reflow → not one of these 3M tapes; use Kapton (TK-1033).

Documents per lot: 3M CO/CQ, datasheet; labels checked on delivery.
Scheduled orders: price held for 6 months.

FAQ
– What is the difference between 2308 and 244? — 2308 is ~30 % cheaper, gives sharp lines and withstands 120 °C; 244 is thinner and removes more cleanly from fine paint finishes.
– 9448 or 9448A? — 9448A has a stronger adhesive for hard-to-bond plastic surfaces; 9448 is the general-purpose version.
– Can VHB replace screws? — For small static loads (signs, fixtures, covers) — yes; for dynamic loads — no.
– How do I recognise genuine 3M? — 3M printed core, carton label, CO; PRIMEAG photographs the labels before delivery.

Construction of a tape roll and the three adhesive families

Every tape consists of a backing (paper, plastic film, cloth, foam) and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer; double-sided tapes also have a liner. The adhesive family determines most of the performance:

Adhesive family 3M examples Characteristics
Rubber 2308, 471, 764 Instant tack, good adhesion on many surfaces; poorer heat and ageing resistance
Acrylic 9448A, VHB 4910 Ageing resistant, heat resistant, bond strength builds over time
Silicone Polyimide tape, heat-resistant polyester tape Better heat resistance than rubber and acrylic, less flow and adhesive transfer when hot

Reading temperature figures on the TDS correctly

Each 3M code states temperature differently — always read it together with the duration:

Code Temperature per 3M Interpretation
2308 (crepe paper, rubber adhesive, 0.13 mm thick) 121 °C for 30 minutes Withstands a single short bake
9448A (tissue, acrylic adhesive) about 70 °C long term, 150 °C short term (minutes to hours) Not for parts that are continuously hot
VHB 4910 (clear acrylic foam, 1.0 mm thick) 93 °C long term, 149 °C short term Short term: e.g. passing through a paint-curing oven
471 (vinyl, rubber adhesive, 0.14 mm total) 4–77 °C Floor service temperature range

Applying VHB correctly (per 3M)

  1. Clean: wipe with an IPA and water mixture (about 50–70 % IPA). For heavily oily surfaces: degrease first, then wipe again with IPA/water.
  2. Lightly abrade (180–320 grit, circular motion) surfaces that need better adhesion, then wipe off the abrasion dust.
  3. Primer for hard-to-bond plastics (PP, PE, powder coat, rubber): 3M Tape Primer 94 or VHB Universal Primer UV.
  4. Press: a minimum pressure of about 15 psi (over 100 kPa) with a roller or press — VHB adhesive is a viscous liquid and needs pressure to “flow” into the surface.
  5. Wait: at room temperature it reaches about 50 % strength after 20 minutes, 90 % after 24 hours and 100 % after 72 hours. Do not load-test or remove for inspection before then.

For 9448A, 3M recommends application at 21–38 °C and not applying below 10 °C; clean with IPA or heptane and press firmly after application.

Floor marking tape: choose by traffic

3M code Total thickness Per 3M
764 0.13 mm Light traffic, walls, pipes; not for harsh conditions, not a long-term clean-removal type
471 0.14 mm Medium-traffic floors, resists abrasion and solvents; removes cleanly in one piece
971 0.42 mm Heavy traffic, withstands forklifts and dragged pallets

Areas with frequent forklift traffic should use a thick tape such as 971 (special order); 471 suits pedestrian walkways and hand trolleys; 764 is for temporary lines, rack locations and low-traffic marking.

Storage and common mistakes

  • 3M recommends storage at about 21 °C, 50 % RH in the original carton. Best-before: 2308 within 1 year, 9448A within 24 months from the date of manufacture — use first in, first out.
  • Applying VHB to an uncleaned surface or to PP/PE plastic without primer, then concluding that “VHB doesn’t stick”.
  • Using 2308 for outdoor masking over several days — 3M warns that the tape can be very difficult to remove after prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Choosing tape by “strongest adhesion” rather than by temperature, surface and service time.
  • Using 764 on forklift lanes — the tape wears and tears within a short time.
