The HIC sits inside the moisture barrier bag (dry pack) with moisture-sensitive components: the receiver reads the spot colours before opening the bag to know whether the parts are still within MSL or must be baked. PRIMEAG’s cobalt-free card replaces the old cobalt chloride card restricted under REACH, meets J-STD-033 and comes with spec sheet and MSDS for your files. Use with silica gel desiccant packs and moisture barrier bags.

Why switch to cobalt-free cards

Traditional HICs use cobalt(II) chloride – blue when dry, pink when humid. Cobalt chloride is on the REACH SVHC list (carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction), so many European, Japanese and Korean FDI customers require their packaging suppliers to switch to cobalt-free cards (CDF – cobalt dichloride free). The PRIMEAG card uses a substitute salt: no SVHC, none of the RoHS 6 substances (Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr⁶⁺, PBB, PBDE), still a clear colour change, and compliant with IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033 for packing moisture-sensitive devices.

Two colour-change types

HIC-6 blue → pink: 6 spots at 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 %; blue spot = dry, turns pink = humidity above that level. Familiar to operators who used cobalt cards.
HIC-6B brown → green: brown spot = dry, turns green = humid; for customers who want the card to look different from cobalt cards.
Both: a reference colour scale is printed on the card for comparison, most accurate around 23 °C; a card that has changed colour is not reused.

How to read and decide

Open the bag and read the card immediately (the colour shifts again within minutes in open air).
10 % spot still dry: parts are within spec, use as normal.
10 % spot changed, 20 % spot not yet: refer to the J-STD-033 table for the MSL level to decide on baking.
60 % spot changed: the bag has leaked – bake before reflow soldering.
Record the result on the bag label or lot traveller.
