ESD standards and how we test: ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1

The two standards are harmonised: the resistance limits are the same, only the names and the companion test methods differ (ANSI/ESD STM4.1, STM7.1, S541 versus IEC 61340-4-1, 61340-2-3). US, Japanese and Korean customers usually audit to S20.20; European customers to IEC. PRIMEAG’s report quotes both so the factory can use it in any audit.

ItemPoint-to-point (Rtt)Point-to-ground (Rtg)Test method
ESD worktop / bench mat1×10⁶ – 1×10⁹ Ω< 1×10⁹ ΩANSI/ESD STM4.1 · IEC 61340-4-1
ESD rack shelf, trolley deck1×10⁶ – 1×10⁹ Ω< 1×10⁹ ΩAs for worktops (STM4.1)
ESD flooring / floor mat< 1×10⁹ Ω< 1×10⁹ ΩANSI/ESD STM7.1 · IEC 61340-4-1
ESD chair, casters—< 1×10⁹ ΩANSI/ESD STM12.1
Wrist strap (through the operator)7.5×10⁵ – 3.5×10⁷ ΩANSI/ESD S1.1
ESD trays, bins, packaging (dissipative)Rs 1×10⁴ – 1×10¹¹ ΩANSI/ESD S541 · STM11.11

Common confusion: 1 MΩ is the current-limiting resistor inside ground cords and wrist straps — not the limit for the worktop. The worktop must read 10⁶–10⁹ Ω; a point-to-ground reading taken through the cord already includes the cord’s 1 MΩ.

How PRIMEAG tests each bench: two 5 lb electrodes ≥ 25 cm apart on the worktop (point-to-point), then one electrode on the top with the other lead on the ground snap (point-to-ground); read at 10 V, re-read at 100 V when ≥ 10⁶ Ω and record the 100 V value; wait ≥ 15 s for the reading to settle; each measurement is taken twice at two different spots. Temperature and humidity are recorded (dissipative materials read higher in dry air). Factories usually re-test every 6 months — S20.20 does not fix an interval; it requires the factory to set its own compliance verification plan.

How much static can a component take? (HBM classes per ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-001)

HBM classWithstand voltageExamples
Class 0Z / 0A / 0B< 50 V / 50–125 V / 125–250 VRF ICs, laser diodes, sensitive MOSFETs, MEMS sensors
Class 1A / 1B / 1C250–500 V / 500–1,000 V / 1,000–2,000 VMost CMOS ICs, LEDs, common SMT parts
Class 22,000–4,000 VICs with good on-chip ESD protection
Class 3A / 3B4,000–8,000 V / ≥ 8,000 VPassives, mechanical parts

A person walking on a normal floor can carry 3,000–15,000 V, so lines handling Class 0–1 parts must use grounded ESD benches plus wrist straps, and ionisers where insulators (plastic housings, monitors) are present.

Test report PAG-QA-ESD-01 — download the blank form

A 2-page A4 form filled in by hand on site: page 1 holds lot details, instrument, temperature/RH and a 25-row table (one bench per row: Rtt readings 1–2, Rtg readings 1–2, Pass/Fail); page 2 holds the Min–Max summary, pass/fail counts, conclusion, root cause and corrective action, re-test results and signatures of PRIMEAG and the factory representative. Factories may use the same form for their own periodic checks. Download the blank form (PDF) · 5-step acceptance check for ESD benches · ESD mat above 10⁹ Ω after 6 months: what to do

FAQ

How much does an ESD workbench cost?

Steel pipe frame from VND 2,000,000, aluminium profile from VND 4,500,000 per bench (ex 8% VAT), depending on size and accessories. Configured quotation within 30 minutes.

Is every bench tested?

Yes. Each bench is tested point-to-point and surface-to-ground before shipping; readings go into report PAG-QA-ESD-01 with the lot, with a re-test after installation on request.

Do you install in Binh Duong or Dong Nai?

Yes. PRIMEAG delivers and installs at factories in HCMC, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Long An; a 20-bench order is usually delivered in one batch.

Can I buy a single bench?

Yes. From 1 bench; repeat orders keep the price for 6 months.

How is an ESD bench different from a normal one?

The worktop is covered with a static-dissipative rubber mat grounded through a 1 MΩ resistor; a standard melamine top is insulating and gives no protection to components.

What is the difference between ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1?

Practically equivalent: the same worktop limits of 10⁶–10⁹ Ω point-to-point and below 10⁹ Ω point-to-ground, and the same requirement for an ESD control programme. S20.20 is the US standard (US, Japanese and Korean customers usually audit to it); IEC 61340-5-1 is the international one (European customers). PRIMEAG’s report quotes both.

How often should ESD benches be re-tested?

The standards set no interval; the factory defines its own compliance verification plan — commonly every 6 months and after replacing a mat or moving a bench. PRIMEAG offers free on-site testing at factories in HCMC, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Long An, with a readings sheet.

How many volts of static can a component withstand?

Per HBM classification (JS-001): Class 0 below 250 V, Class 1 from 250 to 2,000 V, Class 2 from 2,000 to 4,000 V, Class 3 from 4,000 V upward. A walking person can carry up to 15,000 V, so lines with Class 0–1 parts must use grounded ESD benches and wrist straps.
