3M VHB tape 4910 / 5962 (very high bond double-sided tape): double-sided acrylic foam, in clear and black versions; 4910 is 1.0 mm thick. Used to permanently join two materials instead of screws under light static loads — signs, fixtures, covers, outdoor bonding.
For thin sheets, labels and gaskets that carry no load, 9448 double-sided tape is cheaper and thinner.

When to choose VHB instead of 9448
- VHB 4910 / 5962: permanent, load-bearing, outdoor bonding; replaces screws under light static loads (signs, fixtures, covers). Not a screw replacement for dynamic loads.
- 9448 / 9448A: thin tissue carrier for labels, small sheets, gaskets — no load-bearing required.
Applying VHB correctly (3M procedure)
- Clean with an IPA–water mix (about 50–70 % IPA); degrease oily surfaces first, then wipe again.
- Where more adhesion is needed: lightly abrade with 180–320 grit, then wipe off the sanding dust.
- Low-surface-energy materials (PP, PE, powder coat, rubber): use 3M Tape Primer 94 or VHB Universal Primer UV.
- Apply at least about 15 psi (over 100 kPa) with a roller or press.
- Do not load-test or pull apart before full bond time has elapsed.
Common mistake: applying to an uncleaned surface, or to PP/PE without primer, and concluding that “VHB doesn’t stick”.
